I have recently purchased a Lister CS 3.5hp engine. No CS 88386, spec 208/13. What is its date of manufacture please?

That would be a 1951 engine; from 1952 Lister moved to a different numbering scheme, which yours is not.

From the very first design to each and every improvement or modification Lister assigned a spec (specification) number. This was done so that correct parts could be ordered by supplying the spec number. People have confused the spec  numbers with date of build which it is not. In some but not all cases it is the date the spec was introduced.
