Lister CD - New life, from grain thresher to show off piece.
« on: January 12, 2025, 12:06:52 AM »
Gentles,

A few days ago tell you I was after a Lister CD engine.

Remeber the other I lost in 2021?

This one had a diferent life. It powerd a field grain thresher - pics will be added.

A 1000KM round trip to up north of country with old pickup and it ended to be flat grounded with load. The kart is very heavy.

It is a 1937 engine, and now it will have some rest. No more dust swallowed! Just noise, dripping some oil and a few morons staring at it!

Pics will be added along.

Cheers

Gentles.

After some cleaning, saturday on the ute, only monday morning could had help with tractor fork to put it down.

A preliminary pressure washer bath, it reveals some layers of paint - definitely it had a very tough life. (Hence I rather like the stationary from olive oil presses - one life... one story).

This one will be dificult to retrive its full history - a few owners and other souls we cant maybe discover.

Odds & Ends: At first glance: crank main bushes, exhaust rocker bush, both valves to lap or... (let me pull head);

Number plate from 1937... and flys and crank from 1949. what a hell!!!!! Huummm....

Already started to disassemble it... put some wd40 in throat to see his lungs. pressure make it drip down piston; maybe some carbon in rings or worn.

A few pics to the audience.

Defentely this is an adiction!

Injection pump dismantled; injector too, change over valve on the way, valves and guides also, rocker assembly dito.

IP with heavy gunk; valve guides pretty worn; valves lapping will be ok; rockers must have new bushes; change over valve needs lapping too.

A few pics for the addicts.

So far nothing spooky...

PS: After some head scratches, I think the CD  model has some design flaws. Nonetheless the pump lubricating oil for main buches and big end, they could put an 1/4 pipe inside up to the head, from same outlet pressure gauge up to rocker shaft - hollow rocker shaft with oil pressure regulator (or with restrictor)

Gentles,

After a long journey paving front door, the CD is 2nd or 3rd (or other) priority.

Nevertheless, bits still coming up bench, as pic shows.

Another surprise - the fuel filter its not the traditional wick, but a modern paper filter element well fitted to the body.

The valves are in good chape, but guides gone to south...

A few more pics.

Gentles,

More bits to basket. Piston is out and it tells us it is a later model.

Odtimerengines [https://www.oldtimerengines.com.au/lister-engine-parts/lister-cd-and-ce/lister-cd-and-ce-piston-ring-set-std-non-genuine#product-details-tab-description] remark diferent type of ring over the years by engine number.

Now I can say have had a very hard life, and at some point got a new crank both flys ans new piston, maybe from a donor engine. Can you see the witness mark at big end, as pin and nut?

Big end babbit locks nice and small end shows no play, so far...

A few pics to the show.

Gentles,

A basket full of bits came down to town.

Almost clean. IP clean, Injector too and both taken to Bosch laboratory to put to spec and new copper joints.

And... another surprise. Cylinder head cover cast date shows 20 july 1951! Maybe another bit from other engine.

2 pics to showoff (forgot to take more)

Gentles,

Im struggling with the addiction, but so far the asylum don't got me at radar.

Oil pressure gauge is rehabilitated; old paint, rust, sludge, gunk and other fancy stuff is clean. Got a brush of acetone (to release old paint), scratch corners, smoothing bolts, screws and nuts; pass tap to correct threads (almost all BSF).

Tried to pull half of COV, but no joy... stuck with coal. Got to drill broken brass 1/8 screws of oil gauge pad.

Must buy 1/8 40G tap, 3/8 BSF die. Order 1/8 brass screws and a few metric 2,5(think it will be AU).

Some iron already got one hand of primer.

Fuel filter will be done with spares I got kicking around.

A few pics to showoff.

Cheers

Today, giving TLC to the drain tap. tried to fix a dent with torch and a rod.... and make slight fracture, therefore got to weld it.

Toke all afternoon to lap, it was in bad shape, with a rough life.
