Oil in fuel pump housing
« on: October 02, 2024, 04:25:19 PM »
Hi All!

I have a Winget Dumper fitted with a Lister D2 Engine.
I have done a service on it by replacing the fuel filter, oil filter and changed the oil. I also replaced the gasket seals on the rocker covers.
I am learning about these engines as I go and so far so good, but upon inspecting for any fuel leaks I started the engine with the fuel pump housing cover off and noticed some oil dripping in and around the fuel pumps and down through the drain holes in the fuel pump housing into the oil sump. Is this normal? I can’t see any fuel leaks from the fuel pumps or from the injectors.
I assume there should be oil ‘washing’ the components to keep them lubricated, as that’s why the rocker covers and fuel pump housing covers have seals on them. How much oil should draining through the fuel pump case back into the sump usually? How much oil should be under the rocker covers and fuel pump housing?

Thanks for any help!
Robin

pictures ...

im gona guess that its ok, the rockers drain down to teh same area of teh pumps on a SR2 and SL4 .. so id guess its ok .. you would be more concerned about fuel leeks
Lister SR2A with belt 5.5KW unknown make head
Lister SL4 with unknown 7.5KW head

It is perfectly normal. This is just the oil returning to the sump after lubricating your valve gear. The only thing you need to watch out for on these engines is internal fuel leaks. Just check oil level regularly. If it starts to increase then that will be the cause.

Thanks, there was a fuel leak on one of the injectors which I have sorted now, that leak caused the oil level to rise, I drained the oil back to normal levels and will keep an eye on it to see if there are any further level rise. I cant see any fuel leaks so far after inspecting it closely while running.
