Lister CS 3.5hp air filter
« on: August 06, 2024, 01:22:49 PM »
Hi everyone,

Bought my first engine last Thursday and am well underway with taking it apart.
It clearly has not run in a very long time.

I will need a new air filter and housing for the engine but the filter on it don't seem to be original.
Does anyone know what lister engine the attached air filter is from?

Welcome! What part of the world are you in?

That filter may be original. I have seen that filter on quite a few CS engines. I believe it was an option from lister. I have never seen any replacement parts for them though. I would inagine that you could clean the remainder of the metal mesh off of the filter base and use the base and outer shell with a modern pleated element. Should be able to measure the inside diameter of the base and the length from the base to the top of the support bracket for the outer shell and find a filter element that will fit.

Thanks for your reply. The inner part I'm not worried about, should get a filter from an agricultural dealer or auto store.
It's the louvered housing on the outside I want to get a replacement for, the half that can't be seen in the picture is completely corroded away.

I have seen them come up very rarely on ebay and they tend to go for good money.

Sorry forgot to add that in Ireland, on the West Coast.
Think I have no choice but go the generic air filter route so, that's a pity but what can I do.
There doesn't appear to be a fuel filter either, pipe goes straight from the tank to the pump, is that a common practice?

That style of louvred air cleaner outter housing was used on the McDonald Suoer Imperial Diesel Engines here in Australia many years ago. Mine was missing so I made one or tried to just to see if my dopey way of thinking could actually do it. I used a piece of 1/4" round rod and slit it length ways and put a radius on the emds. Then made an opening in  apiece of timber for the metal and the so called die to take shape in. Bugga me it worked. I never bothered about a filter as it is only a rally engine so gets a run a couple of times a year.
