Folks- I'm just passing this along.  The guy's about 3 hours south of Tallahassee, but I'm already engine-rich and money-poor.  Hopefully, I can help somebody.

Thanks for the heads up. Is that the going rate these days? Just curious.

Hi Guys, I had a look at that video. That engine will only produce around 8 HP at 800 RPM, you might get a little bit more at 850 RPM as per the advert. It will not drive an ST10 to produce 10KVA. That unit will max out at less than 5KVA.
I also have concerns about the cylinder head configuration, this is not a standard Lister CS clone. The top water coolant outlet appears to be on the fuel tank side rather than directly above the return pipe as is usual.

Bob- That's an 18/1.  Not a 10/1, or a 12/1.

Hi Guys, it is not a Lister or a lister clone, they max out at around 10HP. This is something else, basically a Lister style engine on steroids. To achieve 18 HP would require an increase in piston size and stroke, a bigger crankshaft and bearings and probably a lot of modification and reinforcing of the crankcase.
I vaguely remember Gary at Diesel Electric Service experimenting with a big bore Lister style engine with a turbocharger, I wonder if he knows who made and imported this engine.
Looks like 38ac has some experience of this style of engine and some spares.

Correct Bob, they have little in common with a listeroid. Bore is 130mm, stroke is 160mm vs 114.3 mm x 139.7  for Lister. They are also direct injection.

Thanks for that info 38ac, I`ve seen a lot of engines but never one of these. What RPM do they run at and are they as reliable and fuel efficient as their earlier relatives? Direct injection suggests to me that they could be a bugger to start. Too much fuel and they will hydrolock, too little and they won`t fire. Is this a hand crank start or electric start?

Bob, I had one of Gary's 18)1 engines here for quite some time.Never did find a use for it so it was sold just last year. They are rated at 1000 RPM, taper roller bearing mains, counterweighted crankshaft. The big end bearingvis a modern thin shell type. Mine started easily but like every other India engine I had it completely apart and made things right. Like any other engine of the type 1000 RPM is a recipe for disaster, 800 is just about it which reduces the rating. I never quite believed tbe 18HP rating. Similar engines from other sources are rated at 16HP.

Thank you, I have looked at some of the Indian offerings recently and have been very worried by some of the 10HP units running at 1000 RPM. Cast iron is good to 800/850 RPM, beyond that you need cast steel. I also have concerns about how well they balance these flywheels. I`ve also noticed that replacement crankshafts from India are a lot softer than the Lister originals. A weaker crankshaft and an unbalanced flywheel is a recipe for disaster at 1000 RPM. I guess health and safety is probably a low priority in rural India.
I`m pleased to hear that there where counter balance weights on the 18/1 crankshaft, without them I suspect it would walk out of its enclosure and disappear like a feral dog.
Most of the recent offerings have taper roller bearings, not entirely a bad thing as they can be adjusted to reduce end float by anyone who knows what they are doing. Trouble is not too many people do know what they are doing!
