An old question: what's it worth?
« on: August 27, 2025, 12:15:12 AM »
My 1951 Lister Dursley 6/1 Start-O-Matic engine  needs a new home.
It is on it's original heavy steel base (same number as the engine on it's data plate), but I no longer have the old generator and control box.  The stainless steel beer keg fuel tank and galv. steel milk container cooling tank are included. I am wanting to keep the existing generator head. It is in running condition and powered my shop when the rest of the off-grid system did not have enough power.  I am in Canada, on the west coast.
Comments? interest?

Cheers
Hugh

I'm not sure how to price the base? I suspect it's worth some money to a VERY small group. To a person just wanting an engine he probably isn't going to put much value on it.   The slow speed power generation deal is about dead as far as I can tell. None the less there is market from hobbyists and Amish.  In the Midwest the engine in good order will sell (which is not the same as what some are asking) in tbe $2500-3000 range depending on how fast it needs to sell, how it appears and running condition.

Thanks for the realistic reply Butch.

I did not expect this to turn into a lengthy thread, but maybe a few more comments at least!

Cheers

Your welcome,
There is are more of them in Canada than down here for sure.  I know zippo about that market other than a couple guys made good money  hauling them across the border to the U.S. and reselling at various shows 10-15-20 years ago. There is still interest in the engines if your patient about selling but the quick sale market is best described as dismal, at least around here.

It's pretty flat in the UK as well... There's a handful of engines on eBay right now, ranging from around £450 to £1500, but the last engine that actually sold (that I can find) went for just £40(!!) in July - although it was likely a basket case.

Cheers!
Ade.
