Powerline 12/1 with generator purchased, how to identify?
« on: November 02, 2023, 12:45:15 AM »
Dont see a model number, just a barely readable plate with powerline on it.

It is in rough shape, been in weather without gas cap or valve cover, but turns freely.  I bought it from salvage guy, who said when he tried to start, water came out the exhaust.

I will try to post some pictures soon.

Thanks,

David

OK, I spent some time looking it over, looks like it has been used hard.

Things that are not as original looking at powerline site https://poweranand.com/ (i think that is them):
  • 10kw generator head
  • had an alternator on a secondary belt off the back flywheelI think a charging system for the battery
  • water pump through a radiator and electric fan
  • engine controller with a lot of engine controls that I dont know and prob arent being used[/]
    • charging system controller

Drained the coolant, it has stuff in it, seems fibrous. Think I am going to learn a lot fast about this engine.  Hope I can get parts easily.

    Comments anyone?

Hello, All of the India Lister copies use standardised parts for the various ratings meaning there are no parts that must come from Powerline other than a data plate. Your 12/1 should be 130MM bore x 5.500" stroke. If you are in the states or Canada all parts are in stock at my shop.  If you are elsewhere there are better choices.

Has it been sitting outside uncovered for awile? (A few years or more)  Post some pictures when you start digging in to it..  They are fairly simple engines to work on..  I have two now. A 12/2 CS clone. From p.m. diesels in India.. And a Metro CS 6/1 roid type..  12/2 is a few weeks from running. But it was an easy rebuild as it was stored inside for 15 years with about 10 hours runtime.. A bunch of things had to be corrected. A couple things I was not setup to do, A well known shop in my area did a bit of the machining type work.

Water in the engine for a long time is not going to look pretty when you tear it down.. Your engine may have the replaceable liners ?  Which helps.. But still expensive.. You eill probably find a gallon or so sitting undr the oil when you pull the drain plug.. Hopefully the water did not get up as high as the crankshaft.. unlikely but possible.. You will have to take it down to bare block and clean it up and see how it looks. I wish you good luck and hope it is not to bad..

You will probably spend quite a few $$ getting parts for it.. As the days of inexpensive pistons and rings, bearings lifters, valves guides and springs were peanuts back then.. are long gone.. Prices are pretty rediculous actually for what you are getting..  They have not improved the parts much since they started.. So you are buying the same camshaft lifters etc that were in the engines imported here 25-30 years ago.. But you are paying alot more $$ for the same kind of crap parts.

Not trying to dicourage you at all and hope it works out..  It  just will not be as cheap as it used to be.. Take it fully apart and inspect everything ,including knocking out all the cast iron slag and cleaning sand from the crankcase. Do not order any parts until you see what you are working with. This is just my opinion and ymmv.. But there is a ton of reading you can do here on the forum to see alot of the problems the India people caused themselves. In the 40 years they have been producing parts and engines copied from the original english engines, they have screwed up way more than they improved.. As far as india lister engines are concerned, they simply do not care.. And put almost zero effort in quality control.

The pics do not look like it is in terrible shape.. :). It just might have some potential.. I think others have brought worse back to life.. But inside will tell the real story.. As I said you can read for a week straight here, and with all the good info here you will be alot more educated on what you have.. I know it worked for me after reading for a year before my fist purchase.. I hope it turns out to be pretty good for you..

So, seems I may been a bit lucky.

  • Pulled the head off yesterday, no real issues there, although the rods for valves, one was really tight, no slack at all.
  • The cylinder walls seem fine, piston also, good compression.
  • Drained and flushed the radiator fluid, then did it again when had head off, there was algae in there.
  • Oil was all milky, definitely water in there, assuming it was leaking through the top without the valve cover and air intake (no filter housing)
  • Starter is bad, wont crank

Here are a couple of things not seen before on a listeroid (or lister).  Seems to be modern version of regulator. pictures uploaded.

Will work on it some more the  next few days.

Did you buy that from an (ex?) member here of the cogen page? Somebody posted a similar governor  set up years ago.

Cant be certain if this belonged to someone that was in these forums or not.  The person I bought this from never had it running, it was sitting out back in their field with all his other projects that he never go to. He ended up passing a way a couple years ago and they are selling his property so were clearing out the projects. I was just the lucky one to get it.

I did a quick search here on electronic regulator and found a picture of my exact controller, going to have to come back to that one in a day or so and see what the site search  here can tell me.

Thanks!
