Petter ph2 fault

Hi all, I have a thwaites dumper with a petter ph2 engine. It's started to put oil out of the exhaust. I have removed manifold and it is coming from both cylinders, but worst out of 1.
Can anybody suggest what the likely repair would be.

How easy does the engine start, as this would indicate if the piston rings are worn, thus causing the oil loss.

Other options are worn valve guides.

Could also be glazed up cylinder bores due to incorrect oil grade or long periods of engine idling.

Has the oil consumption suddenly started or has it been doing this for a while? If as you suggest this has recently started, the least cost option to start with is to change the oil [and filter if your feeling generous] to a suitable grade and give it an 'Italian tune up' i.e a good thrashing. This should improve the situation if the bores are glazed up.

I have only just bought the dumper, was running fine for a few hours and then started slowly but got worse.  The pervious owner says he gave it a top end rebiild recently
It starts reasonably easy after a few swings.

I will give it an oil change and go from there, would 15w40 tractor oil be OK or what's the best grade to use

Yes a 15W40 oil will be quite acceptable, you need to keep clear of the synthetic and semi synthetic versions, as these are known for glazing up cylinder bores on these engines.

Can you find out what the top end overhaul comprised of, and if new rings were fitted did the cylinder bores get honed at the same time to remove the layer of glazing and to provide a nice honed surface for the new rings to bed into.

If its had a top end overhaul you need to check and ensure no one has fitted copper washers under the injectors. PH injectors fit directly onto the sleeve in the head and do not use washers under the injector. I have found this a number of times and it will cause poor starting when hand starting the engine.

Hi all, I spent some time working on the dumper this weekend. I stripped the top end Down on both cylinders, honed both, reground all valve seats and rebuild. I gave it an oil and filter change,
When I had both injectors out I found a copper washer in the rear one, so removed it, thanks @Deisel Engineering for that info.
Now it has plenty of compression, starts first swing and no oil coming out of the exhaust so far, so fingers crossed that's it.
