What type of engine do I have ?

Hi folks,

Just bought Broad Smile from the Norfolk Broads and had her transported to Gloucestershire to run up the River Avon and Severn. Can anyone tell me the /model of the engine please (I know its a Lister Petter)?

She runs lovely but quite hot compared to my old V8 at 90°C or thereabouts. Also the oil pressure is a lot lower, at idle when fully hot 15psi. At cold its about 30psi. How does this compare to the specs ? She has just been to Boulters to have a full service.

Anything else I should be looking out for on the engine apart from the usual?

Hi Stu, looks like an LPW4; search for that on Google and you should be able to find info on it.

I've never worked on one of these so I have no tips, sorry.

Someone will come along who can help though.

Your data plate is on the intake manifold, to the left of the coolant overflow reservoir; within the long line of letters and numbers you should see LPW4.

Those 4 cylinder L-P Alphas are excellent engines when running properly. I have a lot of 'seat time' with them in military power generation platforms. In those buildouts, they are specified with 180 degree thermostats. Attached is a screen shot of the engine manual provided for the military installation. Obviously there are some items that do not carry over, like the 24V electronics, to the civilian world. They are known as a DN4M-1 under Onan/Cummins branding (the engine was licensed/rebadged by Onan for military installations).

Here are two worthwhile military manuals on this engine... addresses anything and EVERYTHING that could occur with this engine.
