Changfa and ST head to the rescue once more
« on: June 15, 2022, 12:46:28 PM »
15 years ago I built up a stand by generator set with a 1115 Changfa and a 15KW ST head fron Georgia Generator.  Probably has 300 hours on it now as our power rarely goes out but when it does it is out for a while. Last time was 5 days. Monday a Derecho blew through here and power has been out since and the set has been powering the old farm house same as normal. AC on, cooking, lights, laundry, everything.  Fueled the set last night and just fueled again exactly 12 hours apart. 3 1/2 gallons. 1.16 quarts per hour. Im sure not going to complain about that when the neighbor is running a 10KW gas screamer at almost a gallon per hour. Do the math on that, $5 gas x 1 per hour x 24 hours per day. dang expensive comfort if you ask me.
Only repairs I have had is the ST bridge rectifier went bad in first hour of operation. Replaced it with a 5010 bridge diode and heat sinked it to the box.
As an aside we sure are seeing who has no buisiness living out in the country. The crying on social media is unbearable.

Oh ya,, due to problems with major distribution lines the co-ops have startled some rolling black outs and shut off people that hadn't lost power do to the storms and theybare crying a river about it.

Butch,
I built the same setup about the same time.
I have used it a few times and have been pleased with the same results.
It's a loud, banging, clanging rig. But it has always started right up
and other than the rectifier on the gen head has never been a problem.

I have several generators but for the long haul it's hard to beat the Changfa rig.

Gary,
Mine is 150 feet from the house thus I can't hear it running. I keep some ear plugs in my pocket in case I go take a peek at it, LOL

Good story 38ac, thanks!
Sometimes we wonder why we buy these things.
Looking at them, sitting over in a corner with dust and spider webs collecting. For a few years.
THEN !!!  ... when the sh*t hits the fan, ... we are happy that we have them.  ;D

38ac,

a few questions please...

Any flickering lights from the ST head?

What speed are you running the engine at?

Can you run internet and television direct from an ST head?

The engine runs a tick over 1800 at 60 Hz and flicker is almost non existent at light loads but is noticeable at heavier loadings. For some reason the LEDs seem to flicker more than the few CFLs and incandescent lights we have left. Yes we run everything and other than the slight flicker there is no difference in the ST or grid power. Still running the stock harmonic excitation. I wonder if the oversized head has something to due with the output quality? I am about as electrically ignorant as can be found.

I dont know where to ask this ..

What is the ring called - where the generator head mounts to a motor ?

Is the Changfa (295D ??)  and Lister SR2 going to have the same mounting?
