New Owner with questions
« on: February 22, 2022, 03:36:52 AM »
Greetings...

I do have a couple of questions regarding a Lister Engine I recently bought, first Lister that I own, and I'm exited to see it run. It just seems that I cannot find dating and specs of this engine, It has it's serial number (17481R8; rated HP 9.5; RPM 900) made in england. It came with it's manual, but there is no information on what type of engine it is (the manual just says 31/2-1, 6-1, 8-1, 12-2 and 16-2);

your help would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure what engine you have. Maybe you could post a picture of the engine and it's data plate.

Looking at "31/2-1, 6/1, 12/2 . . ." etc on the owner's manual, I'd guess you have a CS diesel.  Very well-known and well-understood by several experts here

Can I suggest you google "Lister CS" and see if the many videos and images that come up look like your machine?

Those numbers on the owner's manual probably refer to a 3.5HP single (31/2-1) a 6HP single (6-1) a 12 HP twin (12-2) etc etc . . . all modular items using mostly the same parts

Maybe post a picture?  Cheers

I tried yesterday to upload images but a message pop up saying "Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.". I will try once again to attach the pictures today, I converted them to .jpg format but the same message comes up again.

Indeed it is a diesel engine, I did suspect the same math that the first number would be the HP and the second the number of cylinder; but every CS engine I've googled, I do not find any with the 9.5hp that is marked on the plate of my engine. And yes, as far as I've looked up parts, they are apparently the same for all these engines.

 Well thats a new one on me! You have an 8/1 with the RPM raised to 900RPM and the rating raised to 9 HP.
You serial. number breaks down to this
engine number 174
model.                  8/1
R.                          Factory radiator
8 added to 1950 is 1958 production.

Great to hear what the serial number comes down to; no wonder I did not find any lister CS with 9.5hp; this is great, I do need some parts to get it running; but now knowing that it is a 8/1; I will start the internet search for the missing parts.

much appreciated!!
