18/1 build up
« on: December 29, 2021, 10:13:12 PM »
This 18/1 has been sitting around the shop for almost 10 years and I decided its time to build it up. Actually was planning to do a quick build but that all went out the window with the first close look, they shipped half of India with it. Never seen one even close to this filthy. Picture shows what I knocked loose in about 5 minutes with a screwdriver. I reckon people get tired of hearing it but this is why you cannot put an India engine into service without a complete teardown,,, if you expect to get any hours out of it. A peek inside tbe crankcase door tells you virtually nothing. I  expect that by the time I get done poking around I'll have a cereal bowl full of sand and slag

Wish I had a 6/1 crank handy to lay beside this 18/1. It's at least twice as heavy and the main bearings are 1 1/2 times larger than a RB 6/1.

Thus is approximately half of the slag and sand I chipped out of the block and oil sump. That pan is 7" to give it scale

Wow, that's an impressive amount of crankshaft journal grinding compound :) .

What's the piston look like?

Luckily the enigine must have had a very short test run as things look pretty good. I stock parts but nothing about this engine is standard Listeroid other than the camshaft and governor assembly.

Crankcase basted among with the cylinder block and head.
18/1 main bearing housing and a 6/1 main bearing race for comparison.

Things progress quickly when the work is almost automatic. Somewhere around 50 of these India engines, CS types and Banfords have been through my little operation.

Block prep completed by interior and exterior paint. Experiance has taught me to not trust anything to be right and check every detail. Oil pumps are taken apart and corrected. The camshafts are always bent. Lifters have bad finish. Most every mating surface is dinged up and needs attention. All adds up to time and $$  Taper roller crankshaft engines must NOT have any preload, correct installation is nonpreload, no end play

Due to the way India builds these wet sleeve cylinder blocks you cannot install the O rings on the sleeve and knock them through the upper bore as they will be sliced and leak every time.  I stand the sleeve up on the bench and put the block down over it as shown. Then reach down in and put the orings on the sleeve, ya its a PITA but is the only way to do it right. I didn't take pics but you check the sleeve stand out without the orings and correct it of needed. Most of the time you will have excessive standout on an India engine and if not corrected water leaks will plague it until fixed.

The 18/1 has a 2 3/4 crank pin and uses a modern style big end bearing.

Bottom end done. Have to check valve seats, put the head on, set the bump and balance the flywheels, should have it running tomorrow.

By the way this engine will be for sale,, shameless plug.

Butch, as usual more fine work from your shop!

An 18/1 is a large chunk of iron. How does it compare with a 6/1 for weight?

Cheers,

Holy crap! I think I want one! Thanks for the good pics! I don't think I understand the issue with the o-rings and the sleeve.

OK, the wet sleeve has a lip at the top that serves as a depth stop. The block has a corresponding bore at the top to accept that lip. The block also has upper and lower bores that are the same size that contain the sleeve.  The bottom bore is chamfered so the orings can compress and slip in. At the top the sleeve bore cannot be chamfered enough to let the orings slip by otherwise it would not hold the sleeve up. I can take some pics if thats confusing. Most wet sleeve engines utilize a larger top bore so the orings can get by the lip that holds
the sleeve up, not so on the 18/1
