Leader 8-1 rebuild epoxy question.
« on: November 14, 2021, 09:59:52 AM »
Have this 8-1 bulk stripped ready for rebuild, and asking what type of epoxy we should paint the crankcase internals with?      The casting is usual Rajkot cast, extremely poor, and we believe it was leaking oil through the crankcase, and need to reseal it.

Thanks all,  Tailwheel.

I used generic red electrical varnish in a spray can- aka glyptol after a recomendation here from 38ac.  It worked well, provides a smooth surface and was easy to use, and was pretty inexpensive.  5 years on it still looks good.

I should add that there is a product made expressly to seal porousity in castings, it is called Dichtol. You don't paint an entire crankcase with it but brush it on suspected areas where I seeps in the flaw and seals it when dry

When I did my twin I used white rustoleum.

I was not in a hurry so the dry time was no big deal. Nice white background when changing
oil and doing inspections.

It's been years and has held up fine.

I used 2 part epoxy primer. It's held up for better than 15 years. It was not cheap, but it was easy to deal with and cured quickly. I think it can be found at marine stores.
