Lister 8/1 SOM control panel
« on: July 09, 2020, 09:35:43 AM »
Hi I've wanted a working SOM for years I've now got two which I can't seem to get as Lister intended the start-o-matic side to work when you have a light plugged in and switch the switch on.

I'm no good with all those complicated electrical bits would anyone be prepared to look over this and repair as necessary for me at my cost, paid job.
I cross my fingers..

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

Where are you based? Somewhere in the UK I'm guessing, if you've managed to nab two SOMs... (I also have two, but only one alternator/electrical system, and that doesn't work because the alternator shaft is bent and the starter windings are knackered).

Also, what's the engine - CS, LD, LR? <- Ignore that, it's in the subject line!!

Hi Ade
Thanks for your reply yes I should have added that I’m in the UK
Both my alternators work fine it’s just the auto start that doesn’t work it will start up and run on the button if I keep my finger on it..
Very frustrating..

How the heck do you bend an alternator shaft ?

I have no idea! I can only think it got dropped at some point, the runout was quite spectacular. Unfortunately, I can't see any easy way to get the starter windings off it, in order to straighten or replace the shaft; although the windings are burnt out anyway. I don't know if that happened before or after it got bent, maybe before, and it got dropped while they were taking it off for repairs?

Either way... it's toast; I replaced it with an ST head I managed to get cheap on evilBay, added a pulley flywheel I got from a (former?) member here, to which I attached a flexplate off a mystery car, and an automotive starter to crank it. It works, kinda, but I need to rebuild the bracket it's all on, there's too much flex in the current one. Another one of those Round Tuit jobs...
Cheers!
Ade.

What kind of bulb are you using to trigger the startomatic system?  It needs to be at least a 40 watt incandescent light bulb, modern led bulbs wont work it.

This describes how to keep the set running without having to keep your finger on the button.

SECTION 5
PUSH BUTTON STARTING. HAND STARTING AND STOPPING
OF THE ENGINE
In the event of trouble developing on the switchgear or control
solenoids the engine can readily be started by hand and the plant
run direct on to the load by following the instructions given below.
Before resorting to Hand Starting always check:-
(a) That the trouble is not due to a blown fuse in the house
distribution fuse box or main switch-fuse. or perhaps
even a faulty lamp.
(b} That the battery fuse which is accommodated in the control
box on top of the alternator has not blown.
(c} That the Emergency Hand Reset Thermal Switch J has not
tripped. Press button with thumb to reset.
Move Rotary Control Switch IS to HAND OR PUSH BUTTON START.
FOR PUSH BUTTON START.
(a) Press the button labelled “Push Button Start”.
(b)} Operate the fuel control solenoid bell crank lever by hand
and insert the collar provided between it and the top of
the coil case.
FOR HAND START.
(a} Use starting handle as described in the engine instruction book.
(b} Operate the fuel control solenoid bell crank lever by hand
and insert the collar provided between it and the top of
the coil case.
TO STOP THE ENGINE.
Remove the collar from between the bell crank lever and the top
of the coil case.

This is a picture of a control box I rebuilt 5 years for someone else its still working fine.
