LD1 - the fuel pump issue again....

(1/2) > >>

Stevenbolster:
Some time ago the members here assisted me with a fuel pump issue when I was decarbonising my LD1.  Well, another issue has arisen which you might be able to help with.

The engine is now in the boat and starts/runs smoothly but unfortunately only at about 580 rpm.  The plate indicates she should do 1500 rpm.  The speed control rod has little or no impact  on the revs.  When the knob is turned back from 'start' to 'run', the revs drop away and it will eventually stall.  I've checked that the link spring from the rod is intact and in place, and followed the fuel pump setting procedure as per the instruction manual (P35).

Before I start pulling the timing cover off to check the governor assembly  (pushing the envelope as far as I'm concerned),  I thought I seek some group guidance.

Any ideas?

It sounds to me you need to follow the linkages from the throttle to the fuel racks and ensure they are moving the full amount. Just for fun check that there is no air in the fuel system and that it flows freely to the fuel pump.

Stevenbolster:
The linkages are all good.  The rack moves the full travel with knob in start position, but  the engine wont rev beyond 580rpm. The fuel appears clean and no air. Looks like the fuel pump isnt delivering sufficient fuel.  My inclination is to remove the fuel pump and give to a specialist for service.

cobbadog:
Try this before you send the fuel pump out for an inspection. Remove the injector from the engine and reconnect the fuel line. Bleed the line at the injector then tighten the joint. Crank the engine over to see if the fuel atomises out of the injector.
DO NOT PUT ANY PART OF YOUR BODY NEAR THE SPRAY !
If you do have atomisation then you do have a timing issue or low compression.

Did you alter the setting on the governor fulcrum pin? and have the governor weights got the correct springs on them. you should have a red speeder spring and red governor springs.
