Lister Sr1 Identification and parts help
« on: May 31, 2020, 02:37:41 PM »
Hi all,

This is my first post on Lister forums so firstly hello, secondly apologies for the long post and hoping I am in the right place.

I am trying to identify what I'm told is a Lister SR1. The only details I can find are a number: 10760SR115, a hp rating of 6.5 and rpm 2000.

This engine was bought by my father to fit in his 23ft narrowboat which I have been refitting for him, the wood work and all inside is complete so we are now turning back towards the engine to get him going.

He had someone attempt to fit this some time back and at best the job was questionable. (it was a freebie done by one of his neighbours)

Having had a quick look myself it looked like he struggled to get the engine in line because it sat very low on the bearers.

I have had a local marine specialist have a look and got some advice.

The specialist has said the install isn't great but could work with some tinkering. Firstly he suggested getting a 2:1 final reduction gearbox on it as it is running 1:1 at the moment I believe. He suggested a python or aqua drive to get the final alignment correct although this could possibly be corrected if the reduction gearbox lifts the height enough to get some clearence. He also said the prop might be a bit big to swing on the 1:1 as it's a 14" three blade. Oh and lastly that the rotation of this engine may be an issue as they don't like running in reverse for long periods although we are not sure which rotation it actually is!

My aim is to identify the engine and gearbox, then price up and get some measurements from a final drive to see if this is viable.

Can anybody help at all with either advice for fitment, parts identity or anything else that might be relevant. Thanks

Will follow up with a couple of pics if I can work out how to upload.

G'Day and welcome to the forum.
Nice little engine and should be good once it is running. Yes most diesel engine can run backwards but never recommended so first we have to establish the correct rotation of the engine. I say this because your starter handle has the ability to be reversed by lifting the pawl and rotating it around for reverse rotation.
Is there any letters on the engine serial number?
Workshop manual can be found by using Google search and they are free so this may also help you out with this engine.
As for the adapter some of the marine centres or looking online should score you the part you need.

Hi,

Will have a look for a workshop manual on Google.

Unfortunately there's no other stamps or info on the engine, (that I can find) so no letters or anything. Just remembered the marine guy did say it looked like an L150 gearbox but not sure, or indeed what that translates to!

When I said running it in reverse I meant through the gearbox, he said it was mainly designed to go in forward but not full time in reverse? Not sure why this would be though?

I assume the crank handle/pawl is in its correct orientation as that was how we received it but perhaps a good idea to confirm. Is there any simple way to do this? (can't start it as no exhaust on yet/it's in a marina, but don't want to put money into an exhaust before getting it to its final position)

I was thinking of contacting some parts places but was a bit put off after calling one place, they seemed a bit upset that I didn't have many details to go on. That was why I was hoping to get as much info together before trying again.

Thanks for your help

Ok, the simplest way of confirming te direction is to remove the rocker cover and rotate the engine in the direction your handle allows you to do. From compression you have exhaust open  and close then inlet then TDC compression. If it is happing back to front then you know for certain.
As for that marine centre obviously doesn't want your business and you are probably better off with out dealing with someone so arrogant.
There are many canals over there from my aging memory and no doubt just as many marinas to visit. Also every other narrow boat owner you bump into ask them and tell them you are new to this life and are asking their advise. I think you will be very surprised at how quickly people then open up their knowledge and contacts. Plus by asking for their advise it makes them feel important, which they are and more likely to help.
Like with  our engine and tractor club members we all help each other where possible. I would not mind another week on a narrow boat again but it's half way around the world to get back to.

Hang on a bit.  Without sticking out my neck too far, he did give an engine number, which does not indicate that is a reversed engine, so presumably the crank should be swung clockwise

Very true but sometimes we don't always get the full details so asking if there is any other letters or numbers gets that resolved, wouldn't you agree?

I do, it can't hurt.  I would however, presume that it is standard rotation if not marked as a reversed engine, confirmed for or against by the direction the supplied crank handle is set.  If his handle is set to crank in the counter clockwise direction, I would investigate further, if set to crank clockwise, I would be pretty confident that it is a clockwise motor. No intention to contradict or undermine intended, just KISS.  :)

The crank handle supplied here is reversible. Lift the spring loaded pawl up and turn it the opposite way which can catch many people out. Engines are normally identified definately if CCW direction by letters at the end of the engine / serial number.
NO offense taken about your comments, they are valid and if we all dont ask questions we dont learn. Now with engine trouble shooting it is a question I often ask especially if it is exhausting out the air intake when running. Some time ago many people were troubleshooting this problem and we all wrongly assumed that it was a CW rotation and it wasn't until after a couple of weeks of ideas to try that a picture showed the CCW on the engine number.
Once that was identified and the pawl in the crank handle facing the right way the engine ticked over perfectly.

I wonder if you could tell by looking at the flywheel fan. If you turn it in the way the crank handle is set up the fins should be gulping air not pushing it. Just a thought.

That is a good thought but are they a sucking or blowing fan?

Are you playing with me? The problem is that I can't see your face. Maybe one of those little yellow balls would do the trick. I was going to send one but all I get is  :-\ and I thought I had a smart computer.

But anyway here goes, they have to suck/gulp in order to blow. I am looking at the curvature of the fins.

Hi Gentles

I cant handle it anymore.

Please, Spooner has his neck twisted with this rant. Just tell him:

If fly blow on the left it will be CW, else if fly blow on right it will be CCW.

Simple,isnt it?

I can’t let it go now. I went out and looked at the flywheel of the Lister HR. I did not see what I expected to see.

The flywheel turns clockwise when facing it and the leading edge of the fins are orientated like this  )  rather than like this ( , which was what I expected to see, they push/blow not gulp/suck.

I apologize for any confusion, misinformation, twisted necks that my original post generated. Thanks  cobbadog sirpedrosa .

Look closely at the fins, the side with the dirt/dust is the leading side
