Unpainted Flywheels

Curious,
I see many Lister CS engines with the outer face of the flywheel unpainted.
In fact some look like they were sanded, polished, and oiled.
Is there a reason for this? or is it maybe tradition. For an antique look ?

Whoever it was had the CS with the stove black and boiled linseed oil finish (Casey?) - that was a great look

Hi Veggie

Its only to show off. Mines where polished with wire brush, after with scotchbrite, and to finish a coat of polyurethane varnish.

The rim face has the serial number engraved.

If an engine is on duty its better a good coat of paint to prevent rust.

Nope; Not me.

My guess would be to reduce chips of paint being knocked off and to add a bit of snap to the appearance. 

What was the factory solution?

I's say it's because it's a satisfying finish easily obtained with emery cloth one the machine is running.......
