What are you guys using for fuel tanks?
« on: March 17, 2020, 02:38:47 PM »
I have a 6/1 and a 20/2.

What kind of fuel tank setup do you have?

My 6/1 uses the original green tank that is mounted on the head. While it seems big enough (not sure of the capacity) it is rusting badly inside. The 20/2 uses a 6 gallon outboard engine fuel tank and that seems to be a good choice. But the fuel lines are getting stiff.

I'm considering welding up an aluminum tank to mount on the 6/1. One that holds about 5 gallons, so the thing can run all day without stopping. Also would like a large filler opening, so I can get my hand in there and clean it out.

Thoughts?

Hi cujet,

I used Boyd Welding to build a tank about 7 or 8 years ago. They are located in Ocala, Florida.

It looks like they have the parts you need to build a tank.

It might be worth checking to see if they can build what you need. They might have one in stock to suit your needs.

I am using a stainless steel beer barrel on one engine, and an original Lister tank for the other.
What I had to work with.

Hugh, that’s one tough fuel tank. I guess it would have no problem surviving a toss in the back of a pickup or rolling it down a driveway. Great fuel tank.

Maybe I should have kept it in use as a beer keg

Hi All

I've got a 2 gallon fire extinguisher mounted sideways, with a BSA oil tank filler (the neck was cut out of a scrap tank)  in brazed the side - which is now the top! - and a 3/8" BSP socket for the valve beneath it.

I kept the fitting for the fire extinguisher and blanked it off for use as a port for inspection / cleaning.

I've done a neat job and it doesn't look too out of place.

I have an old 'Atco' lawnmower tank, (a horizontal cylindrical one, which looks quite period) with the intention that when the Lister goes into service I'll mount it some where handy on the top of the engine and fit a double banjo to the injector pump. The main tank will run the veg oil, with an easy change over to dino diesel at the end of each run, to aid starting, particularly in the colder months.

Cheers
Stef

Tighten 'til it strips, weld nut to chassis, peen stud, adjust with angle grinder.

I use an oil reservoir used on hydraulic systems. Available in many sizes.
They are available in many shops and have the fill/drain ports already in place.

Stunningly nice!!!

I neglected to mention that both units are semi-portable. The 6/1 is on tires, the the 20/2 is on the steel pulleys, used as wheels, that came with the engines.

If your not concerned about the tank being certified as a fuel tank this hydraulic tank Northern Tool might be something to consider.

At one time I was looking into an air tank from surplus center. Need to weld a fill neck on the tank.

I prefer a metal tank over plastic plastic fuel tanks but some people like plastic tanks.

Very nice setup indeed! With everything going on I missed replying about your setup. My apologies.

Yea, new drums of any type are expensive. I was looking for tanks and drums in the 5-10 gallon range. I used a 55 gallon drum once and it got to be too much to move when full. Not many good drums where I am I never seen 10 gallon drums either.

I do like the idea of Jerry cans. They would make good portable tanks. For Lister engines I would think they would look nice painted Lister green.

I scavanged a nice, rectangular tank off a larger Briggs and Stratton military engine. It holds about two gallons and even has a fuel gauge on top! I tossed the Indian original........somewhere.
I've joined "the dark side"....if it has a spark plug, it's obsolete technology.
