Another US BS fleaby postal charge.
« on: March 12, 2020, 12:58:05 PM »

As discussed on the other thread, the postal charges from US ebay sellers are an insult to ones Intelligence.
While Buying components for a direct water hear controller I'm building, I came across this one:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NTE-Electronics-1W130-RESISTOR-1-WATT-METAL-OXIDE-FILM-FLAMEPROOF-300-OHM-4-PACK/232632941101?hash=item362a00fa2d:g:QTUAAOSw8yxcZvvs

For those that may not be able to see the listing as it appears to me, it's 4 tinly little 1W resistors. Something about the size of an apple seed with a couple of thin wires sticking out the ends.
The postage charges for sending these super bulky, heavy as bricks ( NOT!) items....

Postage:
US $13.76 (approx. AU $21.14) International Priority Shipping to Australia

Item location:
Torrance, California, United States

Posts to:
United States and many other countries | See details
Import charges:
US $5.77   (amount confirmed at checkout)
help icon for Postage - opens a layer
Delivery:
Estimated between Sat. 28 Mar. and Tue. 7 Apr.

Includes international tracking

To me, this $5 US item comes out at....

AUD 39.56

Forty bucks! That's $10 a resistor.  They don't cost that much for aerospace Quality!

I use fleabay a lot but like many companies like face waste, Youtube and so many others, they have turned into greedy profiteering corporate Pigs that get a market dominance then just bend everyone over and screw them for all they are worth and more.

Hi glort,

USPS just raised their Flat Rate Priority Mail prices as well.  A large box went from about $17.00 to almost $22 in January.  There is a not to subtle war going on by conservative business interests in our congress to kill the USPS so UPS and FEDEX can capture the market.

When I grew up the Post Office was one of the services we, as Americans, were genuinely proud of but we didn't realize it was socialist to have the government deliver the mail.  We will be so much better off when it costs $8 to pay the water bill by mail.  OK, interstate mainland packages are at this time cheaper because of the competition the USPS represents but to Hawaii and other non continental 48 states the USPS is half or less and provides faster service.

I guess you pushed one of my buttons.  I kept as unpolitical as I can but I do feel your pain.  ;~)

Oh, your item is probably made in China.  Good shopping.

I hear you Casey.
Same as when I was a kid.  People looked at the post office as a good and noble thing. people relied on it especially out of the cities. The post office had integrity and honour and was a place of significance and importance.

Some years back they Franchised loads of post offices and the prices of everything went up dramatically and they are operated on a private enterprise footing now. You walk into a post office and you don't know where the hell you are. There is a section where you can buy postal boxes and satchels and other postal items but the rest of it is like a convince store.  You can buy toys and coffee and Stationary, games, gift cards for hardware stores, Itunes and everything else, Snacks, drinks and so it goes.
The lines are long, the service is slow and in the suburbs inevitably run by someone whom can barely speak English and the overall care factor is ZERO.

Nearly all the people delivering anything bigger than a letter are contractors now and their service has a reputation of being beyond Pitiful. It has become a joke of nationwide disgust about the knock and run parcel delivery.  These clowns fill out a  "sorry  we called but you weren't home" card which then means you have to go to the post office and collect the item yourself. The cards are often prefilled before they even get anywhere.

These couriers have been caught endless times on home CCTV where they walk up to the door sans parcel, put the pre filled card under the door, get back in their van and drive off. I have had several times cases where I heard the knock and before I could get up and get to the door, the guy was driving down the street. I'm not exaggerating.  My annoyance was completely offset by my amazement at how the hell they got back down the steps, into the van, down the driveway and up the road in literally 10-15 sec.
I put a post on a forum about it and the general reaction was " What? The guy actually knocked? Geez, that's unusual, you must have a more through bloke!"

There is a career CEO running the whole thing  making more than any other CEO  respectively and the service across the board has gone to the pack.  Another thing is when buying from OS, the item arrives here in days and then sit for a week, more commonly 2 in a postal centre before it get delivered 5 Km away. Again, another well known and endless example  case.

The post office was once held in great reverence and respect when I was a kid, now it's seen largely as a joke and a rip off.

I don't think electronic components are made anywhere But asia now.
Maybe some proprietary microchips but common stuff like Resistors, Caps and run of the mill IC's like  555", LM''s etc,  Pretty sure not. Japan used to do a lot but I think they just do the more specialist stuff now too.

True to Chinese reputation, there is a big problem now with Fake Chips.  Sometimes these are originals  recycled and tarted up to look new, sometimes they are completely Different chips just pained over with the fake spec or sanded and laser etched with the new number.
It's a really big problem even for manufacturers as they might get the right chips at first and the fakes later.
They may test OK but soon fail and by that time, the fakes are falling over in appliances being used.

Glort try Digikey.

Thanks mate. I didn't realise they had a branch in OZ.
I need some High power Mosfets and Optocouplers that I can't afford to get dodgy ones so I'll give them a go.
