Tanman:
I'm thinking about doing some importing, could anyone refer me to a good customs broker?

If your an American citizen you might want to start by obtaining an import/export license.

My Canadian licenses were free of charge
Familiarize yourself with the HST codes, your Broker will need to know the tariff classification on the goods your importing.
https://hts.usitc.gov/
Multiple carriers maybe involved with logistics, which your broker will arrange payment to each on your behalf.
I use a Broker from Winnipeg never had a face to face, all communications and documents via emails, you will need a flatbed scanner to scan signed and digitized documents or create a digitized signature file that you can past into a document.
Or you can purchase a digital capture device.
