Oil for LR1
« on: February 07, 2020, 05:08:22 PM »
Hi

Just finishing rebuilding of my LR1 and I would like to know what type of oil I should use?

The manual says SAE 20/20W or SAE 10W

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Any modern Multigrade engine oil will be so far above spec for any old stationary engine the designers could not have Imagined them.
I wouldn't get too fussy.  The cheapest stuff you can get will be more than what it needs and well beyond anything that was available when the thing was built.

The important thing is not the oil you put in them but Changing it regularly and keeping it clean.

Lister originally recommended an SAE 20 detergent oil for temperate use.

Personally I would use a multi grade detergent.

What Ihave ound with grades of oil is it ill depend on the temperatures in your area. SAE20 is suitable for cooler climates and SAE30 for warmer climate. As mentioned today most oils will work for you so a dieasel oil that is easily available to you is as good as you need.
