Engine Stud Fix?
« on: August 27, 2006, 11:05:56 PM »
Greetings I am newly registered but have been lurking for a while. Very cool and informative site.

I have a new 10/1 Powerline Anand and am building a stand to use it with a 7.5 Kw ST gen head that I picked up in NC.

I noticed an oil leak and have found that it is coming from the oil sump cleanout port lid. The stud is stripped and won't hold the lid
down tight.

Can I remove this stripped stud and replace it? Is it friction fit, screwed in, glued in or what? Or should I try to re-dress the threads
with a die?

Thanks for any advice.

Jim

Use a pair of vise grips and remove it. Then thread in a new stud.

looks like the threads are only stripped at the bottom of the bolt.. temp,fix.. put some washers on top of it to space the nut away from the stripped part..get you by for a little bit..sid

Like Sid said, but first fix the gasket and/or mating surfaces so you don't have to over- tighten the nut to get a good seal.  I'll bet that's how it got stripped.  Epoxy steel works wonders as a filler when castings have flaws.

That is how I would fix it.....BUT!....My Listeroids are British threads, not off the shelf stuff..you may have to find a sorce for the correct thread stud.
