LISTER LR1 & LD1 Fuel Tank Straps

The Lister LR1 I have just purchased as a 'project' came without it's fuel tank straps. Unbeliveably, it had tie-wraps fitted to hold it on!

My plan is to restore the engine and I would like to fit original parts where possible

My research confirms that Part No. 570 - 10630 is the correct part.

I am struggling to find any at a sensible price. Sleeman and Hawken who are the parts distibutors for Lister Petter gave me a price of £56 plus VAT EACH, which is more than I paid for the engine!

I am throwing this out to the form to see if there are any suitable alternatives

They are only about half inch wide flat steel wrapped around 3/8 round bar at each end and drilled for 1/4 unf bolts. The most important part is the 2 light alloy perches for the tank to rest on. I'm sure you could fabricate them for a lot less than 112 pounds.

See the big stainless hose clamp in the image (this one's about 3 or 4 inches (70/80mm)  They're cheap as chips

Buy a couple of them.  Cut the strap bit in half.  Weld in a suitable length of lightweight flat steel.  Bend in the right places . . .

Voila!

If youre in the UK and I suspect you are look on sites like preloved.co.uk or gumtree as well as free ads papers etc. |If youre near the coast there's usually someone with lister parts off old boats. Same for places that hire out mixers etc.
The Lister LD LR SR etc are good engines until you need a part then they are horribly expensive.

Always pays to check ebay for such. These are listed on EbayUK but are located in the states. Shipping might kill the deal for you but my motto is if Sleeman is the only source I don't need it.

I know if you have the tools to do it they would be so easy to make, like so many things. Keep a look out on the auction sites as suggested and scrounge through some scrap yards to find your missing straps.
It is always nice to have original but it comes down to how much do you want to pay?

I've got my eye on an old LR1 which needs restoration, so I may bid for that, so I'll have 2 units - one to restore and the other for spares

We never own a spare engine!
It is always another project awaiting it's turn to be resurrected.

Once you have this disease you start finding all sort of toys to bring home and some even follow you home if the missus isn't keen about the hobby. Start building another shed is all I can say.
Hope you get the second project.

How's your search going? I am currently stripping down a LR1 to restore and could send you photos and dimensions if you wish to fabricate the bits.

If you are determined to produce a total replica of the original you will have to fabricate it yourself. If you want a cheap and easy fix take it to your local timber yard, they will have a hand held machine for strapping timber/building materials and etc for haulage. This will be a 1/2" steel band held in place with an aluminium swage. Tell them to turn down the tensioner to the minimum or it will crush your fuel tank. If you put the aluminium cleat out of site no one will ever know the difference.
