electric meter
« on: September 23, 2018, 06:11:46 PM »
hi can anyone help. I have a Lister start-o-matic I installed a old type electric meter ( the type with the rotateng round disk) to keep track of how many units the were produced and used by punting electric into a storage heater

the problem is that when the meter is connected the auto start fires up the generator even if there no load switched on.

what type of digital meter is suitable I need sump-thing that will record and keep the total units used for years even when there is on power being used.

Hi Vegoil, I also have an SOM. I would recommend doing what I do. Mine is connected to an electrical distribution board. One fuse in that box is connected to a sixty watt light bulb, this is used to trigger the SOM and get it started. Once it is running I flick on the other breaker switch that feeds power to the domestic fuse board turning on everything else. Fit your meter between the generator breaker and the domestic breaker switches, it will record everything except the 60 watt light bulb. When you need to shut it down, do the reverse; flick the breaker to the main load and then turn off the light switch. Modern electronics do not go well with the 12/24 volt dc sensing circuitry used to start a SOM.

Keep it simple,

Bob
