3hp Lister CS how big a generator can one drive
« on: September 02, 2018, 04:12:34 AM »
Just wondering how big a generator a real 3hp CS could drive as a backup generator?
or is it more suitable to drive a 24volt alternator and charge batteries in stead?

roughly 1.5 kw
Faster - Better - Cheaper  You can have any two, but not all three

I thought the supercharging, would have been  the was to go, you already have somewhere for the belt to go.  ;D
GM 671 Blower on a Lister, thinking it might not end well.

I'd think a 3kw ST head would be a fair size.  Not too much windage loss (from too big of fan in the alternator), but large enough to allow for brief overloads.  The ultimate test, is to start it up, and start applying load.
1.5kw is a good start, and should be able to handle essential needs.  I would not expect to be able to sustain over 2kw

thanks everyone, for your thoughts, there is a strong attraction to a "real Lister" as a kid we had 32volt lighting, and then  a start o matic, to keep mother happy.
i used to turn the light on to hear the engine start, when i was small.
it run till the mid 70,s when they got power.
We had a 3 day blackout this year and we survived on the 24 solar panels on the roof, and an old Honda e2500.
So there is an excuse to put something together just in case. So i'm doing a bit of research.

Hi OSM

Have a look through the archives at 'Starfire's early posts, lot's of good stuff with a 3/1 and car alternators.

Cheers
Stef
Tighten 'til it strips, weld nut to chassis, peen stud, adjust with angle grinder.

Sorry joke fallen very flat.

Back in the 70's for a short time in worked  on a couple of Keith Black 426 Hemi's with  Weiland Blowers

You could always Turbo the thing to get an extra couple HP.
It took me back to that moment, i still have a  Weiland air scoop some were, that would look good on the inlet pipe of a cs.
