Glad i could help, but don,t want to feed an addiction. LOL,  Then i can't talk i have 13 seagull outboards in my shed. So if you get one report back, ok.
And i did see a 7.5kw 3 phase motor, in the Sons, workshop last week, that would go well with a zs195 im thinking.

Are you in OZ?

Well i think i might have found the original Australian seller of my ZS195.
And he has them cheap, not as cheap as mine but not too bad.

Those 195's are indestructible !
if anyone is looking for a super reliable beast of an engine, then you should get one of these before the guy stops importing them.
They typically run at 1800 - 2000 rpm when driving generators but man they are loud.
Women and children usually start crying an run away in shear terror.

But they last forever.

I took one of these and slowed it down to 900 rpm after making a few modifications.
At that speed it was much quieter and could still make over 3Kw of generator power.
I basically I turned it into something like a Listeroid CS6.  Slow speed and 3Kw.
My neighbour fell in love with it and bought it off me.
Every now and then I hear the chug...chug...chug of the unit when he runs it.

if interested, here's a video of it before I sold it.

Hi veggie, I love these simple diesel engines, yes they are a bit loud but a decent exhaust system and a sound proofed shed should rectify that.  Love the idea of one of these in my shed scaring away women and children, who have no place there until invited. I might have to buy two to be certain of privacy!

Lots of little Kubota/Isuzu/Yanmar two or three-cylinder liquid-cooled engines available over here -  I guess it would be the same in OZ?

Many I think are ex aircon plants out of buses, or small tractor engines.  There is a small industry importing them from Japan

This is an example - 12 HP, $800

The Ebay ad for the Kubota has a link to a PDF with the engine specs. Under the heading "Reversed Engine Revolution and Remedies" it speaks of how to tell and what to do if the engine runs in reverse.
Some months ago I experienced the same phenomenon with a Yanmar Clone. Maybe this is not such a rare occurrence after all.

Reversing the engine was common on earlier marine diesel engines with the propellor shaft permanently coupled to the crank shaft. the engine was stopped, the cam shaft was moved to the other set of cams, by sliding it back and forth in its bearings and the engine restarted with compressed air.

A mate of mine started work on small coasters around the UK in the early '60's and this arrangement was common. As they were hard worked and under maintained old ladies the supply of air was limited by the ancient compressor's ability to keep up with the demand, so the skipper had to use the minimum of helm orders to maneuver in harbour, with each order, ahead, astern and stop requiring a restart.

See this link for details of reversing the Villiers motors in the Bond mini car

It doesn't mention it, but from memory, I believe they had a second set of points as well.

Cheers

That's a totally different situation than when an engine that it designed to run in one direction only, for some reason as yet unknown to me, runs in the opposite direction.

This situation if left alone will cause oil starvation, since the oil pump only works in one direction. There may be other possibilities for the engine being damaged as well.
