slow speed petrol/gasoline listeroids
« on: July 27, 2006, 08:55:18 AM »
Hallo,

are there some of the old style slow speed petrol/gasoline engines build in india today?
I'm thinking about running them on bio-alcohol.

Or are there other reliable slow speed petrol engines like the »Lister L« built today?

Thanks
Lars

Field marshal has some flat heads rated around 2000 rpm, but I don't know anything about them ( their idea of BS engine in cast iron it looks like ).

Kissan has the KN-2 rated at 20 hp 1500rpm, again I know nothing about them other than its an OHV twin for stationary use with a goveverner.

I don't think a flat head is the best choice. I think you could also run 90 proof alcohol on a relatively stock GM 90 with carb and perhaps as little as 20% injection

Thanks to you both.

2000 rpm are not slow speed in my opinion and the arrow engines are far to big for me. I was looking for 6HP engine.
I had the hope the Indians would copy the lister L type enginges too.

Maybe I have more luck to get an old one from the UK.

BTW I'm also looking for an original Lister CS 5/1 or 6/1. UK isn't too far away from Germany.

Thanks anyway
Lars

This document gives a good overview to drool over.  It is 10MB.
http://www.arrowengine.com/media/Cseries_Overview.pdf

The C-46 engine is about the same as a 12/2 Lister in HP and RPM, the above doc lists the price at $11,355.00 fob Tulsa as of 1 year ago.  And really for what you are getting IMO that is worth it if you really need something you can depend on, probably cheaper then buying an original Lister in the day.  These things are made to run 24 hours a day for years, as is from the factory.

Thanks Guy,

my motivation to get a Lister CS is very much higher than to get a Lister L.
I'll have a look to the UK ebay since now. Maybe I have some luck and find someone selling a CS to me and a neighbour of his a Lister L.
I'm a bit afraid of taking a CS home myself, because my spoken english by far isn't as good as my written english. And that is sometimes a problem too. Not to mention the understanding of native spoken english.

Till then I'll have a look on a Topland Listeroid 5/1. It's said to be in excellent quality. Let's see.

Thanks
Lars

Lars, don't forget germany is closer by road to where most Listers are than the north of scotland.

They do come up on ebay uk now and again, search for "Lister CS" in groups

Business, Office & Industrial > Agriculture/ Farming > Stationary Engines
or
    Business, Office & Industrial > Agriculture/ Farming

The other one to check is google for all the farm equipment auction houses, then subscribe to their lists, also Google watch / notification thing.

prestonservices.co.uk often have stuff, but not cheap.

at the moment they have one, running, very nice original condition CS 6/1 complete with fuel tank etc that they themselves removed from the original location, price 550 uk pounds, that's 806 Euro, if you declare to him in writing it is for export and supply a german VAT number and say it is for export then no tax or surcharge on that price.

If you want a lister grab this one, they are getting rarer and more expensive almost by the week

UK VAT is 17.5%, but since it is exported there is no Uk vat

worst case scenario is you or a mate are not german VAT registered, so you pay german VAT on import.

if you can get the lister in under the german 7% rate then you're on a winner.

don't forget, you are buying an ANTIQUE.

Follow up to myself

I know people who have done EXTREMELY well by accurately describing their engines as "Vintage Heat Engine" and go on to describe the characteristics as "weighing three quarters of a ton, and when new or if fully restored generating five or six horsepower"

Hi Guy,

the VAT here in Germany is 16% and will raise in January up to 19%. Or do you mean something different with the 7% rate?
We have 7% VAT only on everthing eatable and literature.

I don't understood your last post, what do you want to say with it? Does this have something to do with customs duty?

Yes lars, sometimes describing something in a different way, but still telling the truth, can mean you pay a different rate of tax or duty.

Hallo Guy,

I got a relatively positive answer from prestonservices. I don't know if I'm allowed to come over and pick it up on a weekend. At a normal weekday I can't manage that.

Now I have a question. The engine is said to have the complete with fuel tank etc. That might mean there is the hopper cooler tank (is it called like that?) also attached to the engine.

Could you measure the size of that water tank of your s-o-m for me? I don't know if I could load it in the back of a VW T4 Bus? How are these tanks fixed to the engine normally?

Thanks
Lars

screw the hopper tank, they aren't worth transporting, any old copper water cistern or steel barrel will do the job nicely.

the original fuel tank is well worth having though.

preston is about on the weekends so there is always a way to pick it up.

my hopper tank got sold on ebay for 25 quid months ago, now run with a pukka radiator.

HTH etc
