I believe the anti-clockwise engine means you can close couple the alternator. I been reading everything I can find about engines and generators as I'm trying to build one!

Generator heads - alternators can turn either direction. The Lister industrial engines turn anti-clockwise while the marine types turn clockwise. Marine propulsion normally runs through a gearbox which reverses rotation.

So what about adding a started....does it have to be anti-clockwise starter, or do i need to find a Lister genhead, with the starter built in.

Yes, you must install a DC starter of the proper rotation matching your engine... they are not reversible.

More bad info on the net! I read an article that said the cooling fan in an alternator only worked in a clockwise rotation
