LPW3 can it be used with WVO
« on: September 27, 2015, 05:53:12 AM »
Ive come across a new LPW3. Can it be used with veggie oil?
and what is the market value of these engines?
Are parts hard to get in States?

I know this forum is mainly for slowspeed listers and such but i only have a few days to decide and dont have time to wait for new account on microcogen.
any insight is helpful.

We consider the LPW one the Lister "throw-away" engines... lots of problems early in their production life. I think most issues have been solved though. Lister lost their market share (at least in the oilfield) to Isuzu and Kubota and a few others during the early 90's.
These models were used in a number of military applications as well and are just now coming into the marketplace from surplus. There are  large numbers of them and the prices have been driven to the basement as a result. Parts are easy to source and not as expensive as most other Lister models.

The LPW will make a fine emergency genset for temporary and fairly short run-times. They are just not quite so great at continuous duty as their predecessors are. The problems generally do not come around for quite a few thousand hours... water pumps recommended at 6,000 hours, typical 10,000 hour decarb - rings and valves. Just general numbers - your results may vary. We saw a lot of them fail at 300 hours in the very early versions.

Thanks.

If anyone is interested in Lister Petter stuff, one of their shops shut down in Olathe KS. (part of Kansas City Metro)
Looks like they dealt with mostly LPW and DSW rebuilds.

I think i will stick with trying to get one of the Jib cranes.

Did they close because of the downturn in the Oil Patch?

Mis-management long-term... failure to move with the North American regulatory requirements, any number of other internal and external issues, probably many things that are not shared with the general public as well. They used to be quite aggressive about positioning their product line and keeping it sold into key markets... the world changes.
