The problem with that is if you continued to bid it would not have sold for 5 grand.

See the lady on the way out  :D

Doesn't seem like there was much concern about storage deterioration

Well, as it turns out... Bob Riley was a visionary. All of his equipment was kept in climate controlled dry storage - a little dust here and there, but ZERO condensation or any kind of corrosion on anything! That is remarkable. Further remarkable that he knew in 1978 to stockpile a few of these.

None of those engines were purchased to go back overseas... $5,550 was the lowest priced unit and $9,200 the highest (buyers premium added in). Just about where one might expect for a rarity of this magnitude. 4-days trip costs and hauling back to the Kansas warehouse... I guess I've pretty much had my fun for the year! Rear differential in the truck fried on the way back... limped it home though, smoking and growling and spitting gear oil.

This is great to hear, I was a little concerned about that, not being at the auction and seeing the engine first hand before bidding. Did you get the other 12/2 by chance?

Yes, we hauled 6 of the 8 safely back to Kansas! They are perfect in every way and exactly as advertised. The auction was handled with expert finesse and everyone was happy with the process and the outcomes (except perhaps for those hoping for much lower prices). All around good business for us!

I am guessing I will have to change to a new image hosting site because I cannot seem to get listerenginegallery to come up any longer.

It may be a little bit before I get to one of these, but we will dismantle one for close measurement and inspection of the entire setup. Where possible we will prototype some of the parts that the Indians have not done correctly and get some improvements made for our future parts stocks... and so on.

It is interesting that Lister/Petter USA has been based in Kansas all these years... now these engines have had the tour - England to Los Angeles, to Olathe KS, to Omaha NE, to Dubuque IA stored for 38 years, and now back to Kansas again. Their future life will hopefully include being put to useful work rather than just being collector's items closed up in their crates and never seeing the light of day.

I have a full fabrication facility with manual mills, lathes, cnc mills, and welding equipment if you need a hand making some parts. I would love to be involved in that process.

That is an interesting offer... I think our first objective will likely be getting some new cast iron molds for a few of the parts that the Indians have cut corners with. I doubt that it will be an economically viable venture, but it is not too expensive to hire either Indian or Chinese foundries to cast some stuff for us. As far as machining goes, they will also kick our butts in the cost department, but there may be some things that they will not take to the right level of precision. This will be a long and slow process and probably only driven by my interest, energy level, and patience with dealing in the third world.

Those crates will never be seen again. I hope they dont hit the burn pile. Dimensions and details for the record would be great!

We will save them... a little piece of interesting history there. Maybe they will make decorations or furniture. It is the content that is of primary interest though.

One of the big jokes at the auction site went something like this; "You sure bought some nice boxes of rocks!"   :o
