Generator Dog Houses? What did you guys use?
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:44:33 AM »
I have bought a Start-o-matic that is missing its dog house.  So I am going to have to get one.  Now do I use a computer controlled one? Old style needle guages?  Is there a North American supply for a ready to buy one?  Anyone have a design already?

Trigzy was looking into some metering but he hasn't posted for a while.

What exactly do you need VS want?
I may be able to help.

Well I am looking at being able to monitor Volts, Amps and Hz while she is running without putting on a meter.  An hour meter would be nice too.  A Watt meter would be nice too, for seeing how much load I am supporting.

I'm sure I cna get all this in a Digital format, but I would like to see some oldstyle guages/

Ideally find a supply of boxes, with meter holes aready for my meters.. which I will have to source and them put it all together

That is exactly what I was looking for.  The Digital box looks nice too, but those old needle guages tell you everything at a single glance.  the link is for a digital unit, where did you get your pictured unit?

Found a company in town that does this kind of work, will contact them tomorow once they are open

not my work, but just a standard steel wall box for wiring etc available from any electrical wholesaler, and standard panel mount meters, just make sure you earth the case to the generator earth and true earth

Yes thats a nice looking box:

T-19, you have a few options for suplies. Abra electronics in Montreal has a lot instrumentation also look up Electrosonic, most likely the cheapest source of parts. I can get it for you but your better off to buy direct and save a few bucks.

Enclosers: Hoffman, Scepter and Hamond offer a variety of CSA aproved electrical enclosers. I have some new and used stuff but again your better off going to see what is in stock in your area and choose.

This is not sales pitch and I don't realy want to sell you anything, but if your unsure of what you need or how to build it contact me off list for free advice. I do have a stock of parts and might be willing to barter.

Thanks Doug
I thought of Electrosonic from my college days... thier web site sucks
Found out about a company here in Ottawa called Mechtek that has some will check with them tomorow.  Ottawa is a high tech center, not much in the way of supply shops.  I'll take you up on your offer.  Where abouts are you Doug?

You might want to try www.saturnsurplus.com. They have a stock of gauges (and other parts) for the military generators at good prices.
