8-1 Startomatic Instruction Book/Parts List
« on: May 17, 2014, 02:16:47 AM »
Does anyone have a 8-1 Startomatic generator parts list?   I'd like to know the part numbers, sizes and grades of carbon for all the brushes.

Thanks,

I have one of the 8/1 SOM machines here with a label affixed listing the brush sizes. I can take a look at it tomorrow sometime if you like. I should also have the manuals but will have to dig a bit to see if the correct ones are scanned.

That would be great, all I have and can find is for the smaller machines.  Do you know of a supplier?

thanks,

Heres a sheet from a Lister book. The DC brushes are 1 inch long. I would not recommend buying genuine Lister brushes they cost a fortune.  I get mine made by http://www.carbonbrushes.co.uk  They cost less than £10 each and David the boss is easy to deal with.  I actually get mine made 1  1/8 inches long because the commutator and sliprings have been skimmed and I feel they need a bit of extra length.  There are 2 types of alternator used on the 8/1 engined SOMs  One we call the fatboy which is the earlier type and has 6 DC brushes inside it.  4 main DC brushes and 2 smaller ones for the auxiliary field winding.  The other type is the slimboy and they only have the 4 big DC brushes and no small ones.  The large DC brushes are the same for both types and the AC brushes fit both types as well.

I've just bought a 4.5kVA SOM alternator, but those bearing numbers don't seem to match up to what I have, or at least one of them

MJ1-1/8 bearing at the commutator end, haven't got the drive wheel/flywheel off yet so don't know yet what that one is.

Are there other variations?

Drive end bearing is a 6307 Metric series bearing, not what I expected to find!

Shielded on one side only.

Nobody looked at their bearings at all?
