lister ts2 with startomatic issues
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:42:57 AM »
Hi. We just acquired a 2 cylinder lister with a generator attached. We have now found a starting problem, turning the key to on engages the fuel pump solenoid, but when we turn it to start nothing else happens. We can start it by shorting the terminals on the starter and then it fires up straight away. I'm guessing a loose or faulty connection somewhere. My father in law is going to bring a multimeter next time he comes round.
According to the plate on the engine its a ts2 and it looks like the original generator was replaced at some point with a bigger unit. A leroy somers 15kva  3 phase.
We're hoping the startomatic function will work so we can put it in the shed the 2 old generators were housed in.
As I don't really have any background in engineering or electronics, I was hoping I could get some advice on what I'm looking at.

If its a Lucas type and you`re shorting the small spade lug connector on the back of the solenoid to the battery feed terminal next to it and the starter operates then it would probably be a faulty switch, if its the battery feed connection and the other bolt connection on the solenoid you are shorting then it may be the solenoid or switch that is at fault.
The TS2 (UK) would normally be driving an approx 10 KVA alternator @ 1500 RPM so your alternator may be a little oversized, this is not a problem as its better to make an engine maul than cook your alternator.
