Please Help!
« on: February 18, 2014, 07:26:23 PM »
Ok I am brand new here ....what a great forum. I'm in the UK...I own a lister engine with a Brush SCTF 2.25 generator on it. For some reason it has stopped producing power. I have had no problems with it in the past.
I am pretty much technically incompetent and am looking for someone who can either assist me remotely or service it? I am based in Berkshire. Although it is probably 30 years old, having been bought by my father, it has only been run for about an hour a month throughout its life. I would appreciate any help.
I have had an electrician look at it and he says there is no power coming up from the generator into the box full of wires on top.....help!
Many thanks
Alex

Alex,

Luckily there are several very good documents posted here as well as people familiar with your unit... if you use the search function you should be able to pull up the desired threads.

Thanks dieselgman
I don't think there is anything wrong with it physically....all the wires look fine etc. is there a procedure for cleaning/servicing it?
The brushes look fine and the spings on them are pushing them down ok....could it just be a question of dust? If so,  should I just try and blast site through ?  Any other tips?
Thanks again
Alex

I know that one of the routine and important tasks is keeping the slip-rings and commutator clean and all brushes in good condition. Visual inspection will tell you a lot about condition there. I am sure there are others here with a lot of experience that can answer this question better than I can.

Thanks dieselman, I hope someone will help as I haven't got a clue what the slip-rings and commutator are!! I just need someone in the UK who can either service it for me or give me an idea of what I need to do to service it myself.
Perhaps some photographs would help if I uploaded them? Thanks. Alex

Your brushes ride against copper contact rings and also a small section with a bunch of parallel bars on the rotor... if the brushes do not make good electrical contact through the circuit then you can have problems. There are other threads on this forum about servicing these heads. Have you used the search function and taken a look around?

Alex

It sounds to me like you might have a broken wire to your field windings. That would explain your sudden loss of power and it could be a really easy fix. Take the lid off your topbox and post some pictures of the inside of it and the brush gear as well.  With some pictures I might be able to advise you.

Thanks Listeroil! OK, here are some pics...as you can see, I have all the original manuals and parts lists too...Maybe you can spot something ! Do you think it would be useful if I scanned the manuals and uploaded them? Perhaps they would be useful for others on this site?

Looks in reasonable nick for its age,did you start this by hand or by battery?.Reason for asking is that it may have lost its residual magnetism and a battery start is a sure fire way of restoring it,before you do this, make sure the dc brushes (the ones that bear on the commutator,ie the segmented bit) are free to slide in their holders.24 volts by the way.
