injector pump stuck
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:32:50 PM »
Looking for a good idea here;
I recently acquired a Bosch pump that was used on a 6/1 running WVO. The pump has low hours, so I'm hoping it has little internal wear.
Here's the problem......the WVO has hardened up, the rack is stuck, and the piston too. Can't get it apart, as nothing moves. Does not appear to be corrosion, just gooped. Brute force is not the answer here, so.....
Anyone know of a solvent that will free this up, so I can disassemble it? I have read that biodiesel will dissolve most anything, but I have no source for any.
Help appreciated.
Cheers,
Hugh

When mine got "sticky" from WVO blends the only thing I found that would cut that stuff was Marvel Mystery oil. I'd try a soak in a warm tray of that and see how it works. Even carb cleaner and acetone would not cut the polymerized oil on my IP.

Xylene will dissolve the polymerized oil. We had to recently clean out a gelled engine and none of the usual solvents would touch the stuff until we tried xylene prompted by a tip from a member here.

Also had good success with acetone in a similar situation. Not much more friendly to use than Xylene, but works OK and freely available.  Combustor.

Do you know anyone that makes bio-diesel?
Veg oil is readily dissolved when soaked in the ‘glycerine’ by-product.
A hot solution works faster. Also makes a good hand cleaner.

Caustic will remove it but I think that may not be good for the metal in the pump. Works unreal for cleaning oil off concrete though!

You should get it free with petrol, kero or Turps, if it can still get to where the oil is. I'd get a plastic container with a lid, drop it in and seal it up and leave it for a few days to a week or so.
It will dissolve it, but it will take time to work.  Give the container a shake now and then to bring fresh solvent in contact with the pump parts.
The pump has been sitting a container of diesel fuel for a couple of weeks without effect. I did try acetone today, but have not soaked it long enough to have any effect as yet. I'm not aware of anyone who makes bio-d here.
The goop looks like linseed oil dried out in the bottom of its container. It scrapes off easily enough on the outside, but can't scrape off inside!
I will try all of your ideas, something is bound to work....
Cheers,
Hugh

Yes, inside the doghouse, don't know how I missed it earlier.  BTW, the bore looks good.
Now, about the beers..................
