You need a "back  EMF" diode installed.  about a 1,000V, 1 amp should do it.  Google how to wire it.

BUT - Will those solenoids take the duty cycle you are giving it ?   I thought they were good for just 10 seconds at a time or the coils overheat.

I think these solenoids were used in early golf carts for throttle interlock control.  No foot peddle would leave the power off to the motor control unit and the motor.  I'm guessing again but it may have had to do with phantom power use.  Anyway, it takes minutes to get from one stroke to the next so these solenoids would be active all the time the throttle was being activated at the most modest of levels.

There are continuous and intermittent duty versions of that solenoid. Perhaps moving the wire to the unused small terminal would resolve the issue. That terminal was used to supply full voltage to the coil while cranking.

Something like a 1N5401 wired inversely across the contactor coil should snub it OK, or you could use a Varistor, but diodes are cheap.

Voltage rating doesn't need to be huge as it is conducting when the voltage is positive, just needs to withstand the 12V.

We use a lot of Albright International DC contactors in our chargers, 80A up to 200A and they all have 28V continuously rated coils and the driver board has a 1N5401 across the output to the contactor coil, never had one fail.

Wiring inversely means that the silver band end of the diode goes to the +ve feed to the contactor, unbanded end to the -ve side.

I agree with using the diodes.  I usually buy the 1N4001 - 1N4004; they are 1 amp in various voltages.  1N5401 (and up) are 3 amp, and hence a little heavier.
For quick, easy availability of parts I'll stop by Radio Shack.  Something like these should work:
1N4001: 276-1653 (25 pack)
1N5402:  276-1143 (each)

Otherwise, I buy online either from Mouser (www.mouser.com) or Digikey (www.digikey.com).  There are lots of other good online sources as well.  Mouser is "just down the road a piece" from me, so ground shipping comes overnight (but not free).  It's too far to drive, though.

In use, the diode will be reverse biased (off, non-conducting).  When the magnetic field collapses, the voltage will reverse and flow thru the diode, which will absorb the spike.  The spike will not only burn out bulbs, but also arc across switch contacts and eventually burn up whatever is controlling the solenoid.

Now: for the curious, what are you doing with the solenoids? What is this machine?  Pictures?

I'm not afraid to take anything apart.
I am sometimes afraid I'm not going to get it back together.

Interesting, this may also explain a problem and provide a solution to an issue I was having with burning out some instrumentation on a John Deere generator install. Every fourth or fifth time we would start up, the electronic gauges were burning out... replacing them was getting quite expensive! I suspected something related to a surge from the starter solenoid, but the spike was too momentary and fast to capture any reading with my equipment and it seemed to be erratic in that it didn't happen every time the machine was cycled on and off.

Thanks guys!

Hey Butch! Love your setup! When can you come over and chew up some wood for us?

I basically am getting too old to cut and chop wood anymore without paying the price with heavy aches and pains. Looks to me like you have this thing figured out!  I had to burn wood this fall in Alaska and hand cut and chopped about a cord or so... glad to be going back to Kansas on Friday before it gets sub-zero around here and the real work begins!

Why not use 24 volt bulbs.......or two 12 volts in series?

Better cure the problem at source than try and mask the effects?
