Air Starter for Lister(Roids)
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:42:43 PM »

>>>>>>> NO LONGER AVAILABLE <<<<<

Anyone getting tired of hand cranking your Lister(roid) ?
I have an air starter module for sale.
Works very well. Just bolt it to your frame, connect air, and swing the blue lever.
Used approx. 5 times until I put my big 6/1 listeroid into storage.
(I do not require this starter on my smaller GM90 diesel)

- Built with a brand new GAST air motor.
- Adjustable pressure regulator (for adjusting how much traction you need).

Price is $175 (buyer pays shipping)

PM me if interested.

Here is a video showing the unit in operation...

Hi:
Do you think that this will start a listeroid 12-2? Where are you located?
Thanks
Marc

I'm sorry, I have no experience with the 12/2 engines or their starting torque requirements.
I can only state that it works for a 6/1.

That's a great bargain with a new Gast 4AM, veggie.

No, a 4AM motor won't start a twin CS. The Gast 6AM will (Jen's did one) but the 6AM is an outrageous air hog.  I'd really think an electric starter would be best for the twins.

That looks a neat setup.
I don't know much about compressed air systems, but not needing a battery has appeal.
Is air starting a practical solution, if no working compressor is available at the time?
If there's a power blackout so the compressor motor won't work, will an air tank be adequate to store enough compressed air for a few starts?
To be always available, it'd have to be dedicated for engine starting, so a remote tank fed from the compressor might work?
Leakage a problem?

A small remote tank will provide several starts.  Mine's 15 gallon, but it's for backup only as my Listeroid 6/1 also pumps up a 500 gallon compressed air tank for the shop.

Air start only makes sense if you already have air as part of your setup, I think.  The rubber roller on electric starter motor works nicely, too.

Veggie's starter is a gem.

Thanks for the info fellas.
Re: a small remote tank - where does one find such a thing?
Does it need to have a one-way valve, to prevent leakage?
Would it be practical to buy a small complete compressor, dedicated for starting purposes? I'm thinking its tank could hold compressed air, but would it do so indefinitely?
Also, to really torment people - how does one know what size air motor to use?

The Gast 4AM motor is the best choice, it has more torque at lower speed than the Gast 2AM.  A Gast 2AM will work also, just.  In both cases they work better if you pay attention to not restricting the exhaust and keep the inlet line 1/2" and choose a regulator for higher flow. Gast has the specs for both on their website.

I got a 15 gallon tank at Surplus Center.  They are out of those now.

The trouble with air is leaks.  The check valves are NOT gas tight, likewise pilot valves, etc.   So if you use a compressor with a motor, yóu'll have to add a ball valve after the check valve.

Solenoid or motorized ball valves will not  leak.

My reserve tank is now manually operated; it started out on a check valve which leaked, and then a soft seated check valve which eventually also leaked.

Pilot valves also leak, though special soft seal ones leak less.

Pressure relief valves typically don't leak.

Compressed air is a great power source, and the actuators are powerful and cheap.  The only drawback is coping with the slow, weeping leaks.  Manageable if you know what to expect in advance, or you can learn the hard way as I tend to.

Best Wishes,
Bruce M
