What a morning! Last night a friend offered his boat (still a 16 footer, but with a motor) and a few people that work on his farm to help with the continued retrieval of the gen set. Sounded like a better idea than just me horsing all this stuff into He showed up early this morning at high tide with his boat on a trailer, his able son and two twenty-something girls who were not dressed for the occasion in my opinion. We launched, motored out to the island and carried, dragged and grunted the machinery out of the forest and onto the dock. Heavy stuff all, the Stamford Newage generator generator (1980 vintage) the entire engine slung between two poles, and the steel skid frame that it all had been mounted on. We got it all down on to the floating dock without crushing any fingers or toes, in fact no damage to anyone or anything. Now the problem of getting this stuff all into a 16 ft aluminum skiff without dropping it over the side, or worse, through the bottom. We did it, again sans damage, but it sure put the boat lower in the water! Had to stick my finger in the transom drain hole to keep water out until we got some speed. Was I the only one concerned? I think the young women were clueless of the potential hazards, and my friend with his boat figured "what the hell" We were never more than about 30 meters from a shoreline, and we all could swim.
I wanted to offload the machinery onto the beach and thence onto my truck, but the consensus was that everyone was too tired for that. Instead we loaded the boat (with nearly 1000 pounds of engine, generator, tools, assorted parts and.........right onto the boat trailer. Jeez, the tires were scrubbing the fenders, I thought something would break for sure. Towed the whole thing to my shop and they disconnected the trailer and left for home. I was just rigging a tackle to lift all this stuff out, and another friend happened by. He strayed to help (many thanks).
So the Lister SR2 and the Stamford generator are safely at my shop. Otherwise, they were going to be dragged out for scrap along with a large number of empty fuel drums and an assortment of dead batteries. The island is up for sale, and all the junk is getting removed tomorrow.......Made it out just in time!
Great Day
Cheers,
Hugh
