Wind Turbine Forum Recommendation Sought
« on: May 26, 2013, 11:47:44 PM »
Another project - I thought you had to finish three before you could start a new one?

OK.  I want to know more about turbine equipment and programs.  Any recommendations for forums that use small words most of the time but have a cadre of real earth users as I find on this forum?

Are you going to move up on top of the volcano Casey?  I always figured you were pretty protected there?

Hi mike90045,

Darn.  I googled Jacobs old style thinking I might have found my turbine right off the bat but even google didn't know what you meant.

Aloha Stan,

What I'm doing is getting a WindyBoy grid tie inverter permitted, installed and then approved by our local electrical provider.  Who knows where the 300 volts of DC will come from in the future besides a sacrificial wind turbine.  And then there's always the Mauka and Makai winds.

they show up for sale every now and then
http://www.windcharger.org/Wind_Charger/Jacobs_Wind_Electric_Co..html
""Jacobs attached three blades, made of aircraft quality Sitka spruce, to a fly-ball actuated governor which limited the speed of the propellers no matter how strong the winds blew. The governor changed the angle of the blades simultaneously to convert the “lift” forces that increase speed to “drag” forces that reduce speed. If you could stand at the base of a tower in complete calm and slowly increase the wind speed you would see the Jacobs start to turn slowly when the speed reached about 10 mph. It should be noted that, once running, it would continue to operate in winds as low as 7 mph. As wind speeds increase, the propeller speed increases until the governor limits the speed - typically in 22 to 26 mph winds. At this point, the weight of the fly-balls overcome an adjustable spring preload and turn the blades simultaneously into a stall condition, the propeller slows down and the fly-balls retract, and the process continues repeatedly no matter how high the wind speed goes or until it slows down again below 22 mph.""

I think the one installed in Antarctica is still running, when the summer thaw happens.

Interesting reading about the history and functioning of the Jacobs wind machines.  I didn't realize they only required 10 mph to get started up.  OK Casey, I guess they would work well in your area.

OK, found it.

Actually I'm looking for a wind power forum much like this one or Micro-Cogen.

I need 300 plus volts to get my inverter off the ground.  As you can see at http://www.windturbine.net/documents/Brochure%2031-20.pdf in a very stiff wind these units will deliver 180 volts.

Remember, this is really a sacrificial unit so big wattage is not the solution but rather big volts.

Navitron do a good forum - although ostensibly for their own products, they seem to be a largely helpful bunch. Mind the greenwash though, there's a number of knit-your-own-yoghurt green freaks on that board...

Obviously has a UK bias, being a UK board, but plenty of international presence.

Cheers!

Aloha,

Thanks very much for the leads.  I'm now registered at enough forums for two lifetimes.
