You should be hunting for a replacement head.  Been there done that.  It has a crack.  Nearly invisible, usually between the valves.  This one was found after surface grinding the head and re-installing it.

I don't think any of the Listeroids have chromed rings, I know mine aren't.

The top compression (fire) ring is chromium plated in most of the ring sets I have seen. Some of the secondary compression rings are nodular iron, but generally these are plain cast iron. These are the ones specified and used for soft iron bores.

Bruce...I don't know anything about the listeroids as I've never had one apart.  AlI know is that if you have a chromed bore and chromed rings, they are both to hard to ever wear in.   Conversely if you have both soft iron they will wear too fast.

One has to be iron and the other chrome.

My Listeroid rings and the spare set I have are cast iron, no chrome anywhere.  Oh well.
