Chinese ST 120/240 4 brush 5kw
« on: May 04, 2013, 09:50:25 AM »

I just ordered one of the chinese 120/240 4 brush 5kw for my new 6/1 Powerline and I am thinking I want to run my off grid property at 120vac, the question is if I run the ST using only 120v is it unbalanced? I mean am I only using 2 legs and putting an uneven load on it ?  Is there a method of wiring it so it is balanced ?

Obviously I am no electrician, but I can (don't usually do it though) read instructions :)

Surely your supplier can give you a spec sheet and connection diagram that will tell you what it is capable of.  With 4 brushes it sounds like it could be re-connectable several ways to give full output at 120v , 240v, or 2x 120v circuits, but you will need to see that diagram!  Someone else here may be more familiar with your ST model, and have better knowledge.  Combustor.

You can pull 110V two differant ways. From each winding separately if wired for 220V service or both of wired for 110V only. It is of course preferable to wire it for 110V only if that's all you require so you have no balance issues.

+1   That is a very good reference Butch!

If 120vac is the only output required, then the "dedicated 120v" wiring is the way to go. This will be completely balanced and you can employ 100% of the generator rating without concern over excess heating.

(Of course, your 6/1 power plant is not going to produce anywhere near the 5kW rating of this head).

The 4 brushes are to provide brush longevity at higher loads as it divides the excitation current and subsequent brush arcing over dual pathways...  Yep, if 120 is all you need, most definitely better to wire it for dedicated 120 ops...
PS 6/1 - ST-5.

As Gary said the 5KW head is a good bit oversized for 6/1 power levels. It is unlikely that you will overload one winding if you choose the 220V route. We run ours wired that way because it is used as grid back up and never give balance a though.t (we do know that the loads are split up but made no science out of it) The head will hum or growl at you when the loads are unbalanced but I don't think it actually hurts the head ??? Mine dont have enough hours on them for me to make flat statements about them.

"I...don't want to screw up the ST "

I think you'd have to drop it out the back of a moving truck to do that  ;D ;D

The ST5 on my 6/1 was wired for 120v during construction of our off grid home and it did a superlative job of running big saws, compressors and even the sheet metal forming trailer that made the steel roofing. It is now wired for 240v and used for battery charging on cloudy days. While charging it also runs the house. What we've found is that there is, at least on mine, a considerable voltage drop when loading 1 leg of the gen head.

Congrats on your new purchase, replace the bearings and diodes with a modern bridge rectifier (if it is not already equipped with an AVR) before hauling it into the outback.
