Converting 6/1
« on: April 26, 2013, 11:06:54 AM »
Since it seems impossible to sell Listers here i Denmark I would like to try to convert one of them, possibly my Startomatic, into an air comressor.
But how? Do I need a special camshaft so both valves open on each intake stroke or should I make them open by atmosferic pressure.
Can I use the injector hole as seat for a delevery valve?

I would imagine the "air compressor's" that are sold in the US come with a double lobe cam that will open the intake and exhaust on every stroke. You could possibly make your own if you have an extra set of lobes and put them back to back.

you could probably replace the valve springs with very light ones, just enough to pull the valves shut.  remove the pushrods and have the piston suck the valves open on its way down. As the piston passes bdc it will be pushing the valves closed anyway.  You could just take the air out of the COV plug or remove the injector and take it out there.  i think the COV would be easier.

Casey. It's blasfemi  :D But again. What can I do, there simply isn't a marked for those engines around here, sadly   :'(

I Think I'll try light springs then, thank you all  ;)

Be sure you use an air filter on the intake(s) so the bore does not get mangled.  Maybe consider a clone head, and modify THAT, and keep the OEM gear intact.

Dear Oiler,

I don't get it.  I went back and saw that you want about $2300 for the engine.  I don't know what complete compressors go for in Denmark but here in the states you can buy a lot of generator for $1000 including electric motor and tank.  You can buy an adequate unit for under $500.

I notice the Latin based words are pretty much spelled the same - one man's Blaspheme is another man's blasfemi.  The elefant in the room is the math.  I checked out craigslist københavn entered dieselmotorer and nothing.  And then I tried værktøjer.  Nada all over again.  There's always shipping it back to Great Britain.  I've got three compressors I'll trade you but the shipping to and from Hawaii probably kills that deal.

Best wishes,

Casey

Lowgear. Compressors are cheap here, but an engine that is unsellable is cheaper...........
Besides that, it could be a fun project.

Still open for offers on both engines. I had the rebuilt one fired up yesterday, it runs like a clock  ;D

Aloha oiler,

It might help if you included the links to the photos or a link back to your original offer.  I can't keep this thread going forever.  ;)

Cheers,

I was on a ship which had an air start main engine and 2 reservoirs of air so you had a reserve when you came back after it hadn't been running for a while. Anyway if you did come back and find no air in the bottles there was a hand start 2 cylinder machine that was really a diesel engine and compressor combined. One cylinder was a regular diesel engine and the other side was compressor. It had very different cylinder heads to suit each application. The compressor side with 2 valves in the ports to suck on the down stroke and blow on the up. Simple but effective. Got us out of trouble more than once.
Owned; Lister ST1, ST2, JP4, LD1 & 2x Blackstone ERS8. Petter AA1, AC2 and still up for it !!!

The som set went to Canada...... the 6/1 is still for sale as I don't need a second compressor and I cannot get myself to ruin a good engine....

Hamworthy used to make a diesel engine/compressor combination based on the Lister ST air-cooled diesel. We have a few of these around still. Quite interesting little units... simple and effective.
