Generator voltage drops
« on: April 17, 2013, 02:55:10 AM »
I'm a member of a camp and we have a cheap 2500 watt propane generator which has started acting up.  The voltage will drop to around 30 volts and then it will go back up to 120.  It might last 3 seconds to about 30 seconds.  It starts doing this after it has been running for at least an hour.  It might do it a couple of times an hour or dozens of times.
It also seems the colder it is outside, the less it happens.  If it is below 20 degrees F, it may not do it at all.

The motor never cuts out when this happens.
Ideas or suggestions?

We would need to know more about the generator to help out.  Do you know what kind of voltage regulator it has?  Does it have brushes?

Several things come to mind, like loose connections or a voltage regulator going out.  If it's regulated with a capacitor, it could be the capacitor is going bad.  If it has brushes, it could be they are worn to where they just barely make contact, then sometimes don't make contact.

Pictures of the unit might help -

I'm not afraid to take anything apart.
I am sometimes afraid I'm not going to get it back together.

Sounds like a floating neutral - often caused by bad connections.
We can only make wild guesses without knowing a lot more details regarding your unit.
