Witte Diesel question. 14 hp veritcal?
« on: November 30, 2012, 09:19:39 PM »
Did Witte ever make a 14hp vertical diesel? Found a fellow that claims he as one, says it has external valve push rods and solid flywheel. I don't know anymore more about it at this time. I'm having a hard time finding info on the history of the production of witte diesels.

Hi RJ,

I knew they made a couple of verticals but none this large.  You mentioned the solid flywheel(s?) and exposed push rods which pushes it back sorta pre war (guess).  I rely on David Johnson at wittemania@cox.net for technical stuff.

I stand corrected I spoke with him today, it's a horizontal with exposed rods. Which seems to make more sense.

Are these good engines? I don't know anything about them. I was looking for a lister CS when I came across this.

It's still pretty old - uppy-downy or lefty-righty.

These are great engines designed to work year after year in the oil fields - even the earlier exposed push rods.  But if you can't get the part to repair the machine it's a very much over-sized paper weight.

My engine is rated at almost 8 horse power and the one I still dream of is 12.  These are the two models I've actually touched.  There are others and a few have been discussed here on listerengine and microcogen.

Notice where mine was manufactured?  Just click your heels together.

This is a 12hp engine that I was looking at. He wanted 1800 for it. Said it ran fine.

Hi,

1.  Literacy is it's own punishment.

B.  There are a couple of them on youtube.  David Johnson does have a few parts for these engines.  Like my 8 HP version, many have emergency oil and water temperature shut down and pressurized oil with "sluff" filter.  I think the 12 HP units weigh in at 1500 pounds and run at about 750 RPM.

Good luck.
