Fan belt for gen head
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:05:55 AM »
I think this fan belt would run a gen head on the 8-1. Cooling 812 HP must take a 3 inch belt

I sure wouldn't want to pay for one of those...  A fairly inexpensive, off the shelf 8 rib serpentine belt will easilly run a generator under full load on an 8/1...
PS 6/1 - ST-5.

Its surprising what you can get away with on belt drives,  2 X Z section vee belts running on a flat 24" VA flywheel driving a 5 1/2" pulley on a 3000 rpm 5 Kva alternator with a 2.5 Kw constant, 3.5 Kw max load seem fine, the belts flip onto their sides when on the flywheel, early days yet but hours run are being logged.   Would probably be fine with just one belt.

Mark.

812 HP? Is that on a combine? or a fairly large tractor? I note the John Deere green. Surely not in the same universe as our little antique engines!

I think some of that heavy farm equipment is over engineered for reliability sake.

I have been looking at flat belts and when I saw that 3 inch belt I was impressed. The engine is a Cummins in a John Deere forage harvester. Here is a clip of what it does. And to think my dad cut corn by hand.....
