Another Listeroid owner
« on: July 25, 2012, 01:49:10 AM »
I've actually had a user name here before but there was a mixup with my password and I finally gave up. (probably me being my own worst enemy) Known as krawlr in most other places. I have the 25/2 Ashwemega spinning a 15kw ST head. I've "detuned" the system with a smaller pulley so it runs in a sweet spot of the RPM range and better suits my needs. Runs on bio from jatrodiesel to power my little farm shop.

It's already given me more stories to tell than will fit here but I've learned allot along the way. She's currently down for an overhaul unfortunately due to a fan failure.

Here's a quick vid right after I repaired a snapped camshaft: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5K5WrSZxHw

Edit: just realized that's vid after the idler replacement. The cam broke maybe a month later.

A snapped camshaft in an Indian twin.  Who would have guessed?  If I knew anything about these units I could probably understand why they just don't use two singles.

Unfortunately my computer, "Frankenstein", is currently boycotting YouTube.  In my heart the twins are the neatest looking of these wonderful dinosaurs.

Glad to see you back Don, I wondered where you have been ;)

I know what you mean about the twins Casey.  Just seems to be too cool and engine to be so poor in service. It is my understanding that gear train problems with the twin cylinder CS type is not unique to the clones but a design problem magnafied in them by poor fit and materials.  I have a "fix" in mind and intend to include it in my first twin build,, when it gets to the front of the line.

My cam broke at the taper pin hole for #1 exhaust lobe. They went with too big of a pin and made it weak there. It also looked like they used a stepped unibit to make the taper hole or just a handfull of progressively larger drill bits. I built the new cam using tool steel for the shaft.

Don;
That's what I'm talking about!
I have a 25/2 on a 12Kw head. It's de-rated to about 730 RPM and can just about make 10 Kw (belt a-creakin')
I figure that with pinned on cam lobes, a replacement shaft is something I could lathe turn in mild steel.
Tool steel, now that's gotta be a strong camshaft!!

Turn one out of oil hardening steel, turns like a dream and get real hard if you follow the right procedure.

Actually the piece I used was already ground to size. All I did was cut to length, locate the lobes, and pin it. I welded the holes on the lobes with a low carbon filler and drilled and reamed the new taper pins in the same spot.
