Our turn for a long power outage
« on: August 17, 2012, 02:16:35 PM »
Straight line winds or a possible tornado went through the area yesterday.  Power went out about 4PM.  I pulled the Onan DJB up to the house and plugged it in.  Ran all evening up to just after the news then I shut things down.  Still no power this AM so back on home made power.

I would have much rather used the Lister or RH.  The RH is now semi permanent back in the shop and the Lister is not here and is in storage.

Have used maybe 3 gal of diesel so far.

I was up at 3 to let the dog out.  In the quiet I could hear off in the far distance a screaming generator.  I wonder how many times he got up to refill it?

Glad you have some backup working there, maybe time to dust off the old Lister? It is good when hobby meets practicality... :D

I hope I'am wrong but I think the grid has seen its best days, and the future will bring more and longer outages. Frank C.

Naw,

With the discouvery of natural gas extraction and shale oil we're set for decades.  Electricity may get so  cheap we won't spend the money to bill customers for it.  That's without even considering all the conservation products.

And when those photovoltaic window systems come on line we'll all switch to electric cars and life will be beautiful.

Really!

Power on, all back to normal.  used about 4 gal total in the 16 hrs running the house.  Paula had her coffee, watched the morning show, ran dishwasher etc.

Little 6.0 DJB Onan is an oldie but goodie.

Well done !
Isn't it great to have a hobby that can also bail you out in a power outage.
Now go give here an oil change and a good polishing  :)

So how many points did you earn toward your next engine/generator/man cave purchase?  Should be good for a few, at least!  ;D ;D ;D

I ordered another gun.  She does not know about that.

I can snap a picture of the generator.  It is back out to the shop.
