Cooling Stuff
« on: June 13, 2012, 09:42:19 PM »
With great inputs from the members here such as Romar, I have about finished my cooling system and have some info to share:

1. Since I am using 1 1/8" cooling hoses and fittings, a Honda Civic 92-00 aluminum radiator has 1 1/8" inlet and outlet fittings.  $33 on e-buy.
2. I am using a 316SS heat exchanger to better resist outdoor corrosion ( 52 plate)
3. I have added a T for system drain near the cooling pump to drain secondary loop cooling water in winter; primary loop will have 50-50 antifreeze; NAPA 3/32" bypass hole in 190 degree thermostat--.
4. I have added a by-pass valve near the radiator so that if I need to run the 10/1 in February for house power, there is no need then for the radiator or cooling circulating pumps as the thermosyphon cooling from the elevated 55 gallon tank should suffice.
5. McMaster-Carr three speed 16" 115V / 0.8Amp cooling fan on order for summer uses; power to be tapped right off pmg.
6. Heat ex, radiator, Racor fuel filter and 55 gallon tank all mounted apart for engine/generator to reduce vibe effects.

7. Do not run your cooling lines near wife's  prize rose bush-- my arms are the second place winner in a "territorial dispute" with a very thorny bush :( :( :( Had to place behind bush at ground level)

Romar, thanks again!!

Well Mr. overbore,

Why did you save the most important for the last.  Politics!

Sounds like you've utilized the incredible wisdom of this site in your system design and build.

Photos can say so much.

Low Gear- have respect for the aged and infirm!!!!
I confess an intimate knowledge of Stilson Wrenches, Monkey wrenches and Permatex; however, at 75 my Kodak expertise does not compute with the "Age of Confusers" and unless you are offering --- I will paint with accurate technical words and Lister green when I can find it- ;D-
Thanks

7 whole years.  wow.  I'll take them if I can get them and still be farting around with projects.

Will it thermosiphon?   Any special trick to keep the cast iron from eating the aluminum, if completely isolated by rubber hoses ?

If plumbed right to engine, will it need fan in cool weather?   My case: if warm & sunny, my solar will generally be enough to not need generator.

I plan on using 50/50 antifreeze mix, no heat ex. and remote mount radiator , to avoid vibration, and counting on the hoses to absorb the flex.

Mike,  The main cooling supply line, galvanized 1",  on the secondary side of the heat ex has the required "all up slope" built in with bypass valves to use the pump if necessary.  The galvanic corrosion question inherent in your question should be solved by the zinc coatings on all the fittings, nipples and short runs of  galvanized piping in the lowest levels of the installation.  Since I am a long term salt water diesel operator, I am well versed on dissimilar metal corrosion in salt water. Fresh water, not so much/  Many thanks, overbore
