case cleaning
« on: April 23, 2012, 11:27:10 PM »
I thought you guys might like a change of pace...........

After several hours with paint stripper, pressure washer, needle scaler and die grinder I finally got some paint on "the beast".
In the first pic I'm about 1/2 done...

The last picture shows about 10% of the sand inside the case. For those of you who have never done this before I can tell you exactly where the sand is........where you did not look !!!

I'd be tempted to just bring it to the local engine rebuilder and have it hot tanked.

fab,
I would have thought the same thing if it were not for all the reading I have done here. I don't think tanking it would have got all the sand out. There were places where the sand was mixed with "casting flash" 1/2" thick as well as pockets that had metal over sand pockets.

I would much rather have spent the time doing something else but I'm glad I did what I did.

32, The pile of tools you have beside that block is amazingly similar to what I have out when I do one. After doing one right it isn't hard to see where a lot of the Indian engine wear problems stem from eh?

I too could not  believe how much casting sand I found in my 8/1! :o I even found  deposits in small parts like the main bearing housing:
1972 Lister SR1
DES 8/1 w/iron piston & 6/1 cam
1983 Ford F250 6.9L Diesel
