3kw alternator
« on: April 23, 2012, 06:31:24 PM »
Hi, I have a Lister 3kw alternator (alternator only) being driven by a CS 6/1 at 650 RPM. This is not a matching pair, I have built it as a manual start plant. It all appears to be working ok - the volt meter shows 230v and several 100w bulbs can be lit.  But it cannot start the single phase motor in my pillar drill, rating unknown, or another 1ph motor rated at 1600 watts. Any ideas why?

The inrush (i.e. starting) current of a 1600 watt motor will certainly exceed what a 3 kW alternator will put out.

It appears I may have been driving it too slow.

I have measured the relationship of volts and RPM. At 300 RPM the generator puts out only 18 volts but at 600 RPM it delivers about 320 volts.
This powers my pillar drill. When I switch the drill on the PD drops to about 230 volts (when I was running the alternator at 230v the PD dropped to zero).

But although I am running the engine at the correct speed (650 RPM without load) the pulley ratio may be wrong just to get more power. I presume something is going to break.
